If it's wrong to eat meat, then you must be saying animals should be punished for eating meat, as well.

I don't have anything against vegans / vegetarians - unless they're trying to impose their diet on me. I can't do it. I tried being a vegetarian (for experimental purposes) and I became very ill for almost a week.

In place of the chickpeas in that hummus recipe, try edamame.  Pretty tasty, too.

And, Smashing... why are you so angry?  Just let people be who they are.  The ones who annoy you, just don't spend your time with them.  I'm sure things about your personality annoy others.  You be you, let them be them.  It does depend on WHY someone chose to be a vegetarian, too.

really? I am so used to hummous the way it is, I dont know.  maybe.  thanks for the idea

Maybe swap that edamame idea for something you'd put guacamole on.

La-Ritournelle

The question of what life is sentient and what isn't is a big question.

Some folks draw the line at animals and others take it further to plants as you will find in a lot of eastern philosophical discourses.  To some, higher sentience is sacred.  To others, life is life.  For us, intelligence denotes some responsibility to know better, and therefore, do better.

Some people attempt fruitarianism which I heavily advise against because it's extremely unhealthy, but it causes the least harm.

From an environmental and ethical standpoint, it is the healthiest (when you consider the poisons, parasites, and illnesses that move up the foodchain) and causes the least harm.  By eating lower down on the foodchain, there is less waste, less industrial nonsense, and of course less suffering for animal parties.  You have to remember that the animals we eat also eat tons of vegetables over their lifetime to make just a little bit of protein.  Some people would argue that this is not sustainable.

It's less about being perfect and more about causing the least harm and being more sensible from a sustainability standpoint.  Of course, most vegetarians can't carry on discourse about the topic--but that's an entirely separate issue.

central nervous system - sentience

seems pretty simple to me

It's less about being perfect and more about causing the least harm and being more sensible from a sustainability standpoint.

This is what tends to make me shake my head at the 'hypocrite' counter argument.  Very few vegetarians or vegans I have met believe they are truly doing 'no harm', and very few omnivores (or self proclaimed 'carnivores') I have met have zero ethical rules on what they will eat (for instance, other humans), so it is all on a scale.

Of course, most vegetarians can't carry on discourse about the topic--but that's an entirely separate issue.

Yeah, but most people in general can not carry a discourse on the issue.  The majority of people default to whatever the rest of their peer (current or targeted) group is doing, which makes sense since it is the same place people pull their morality in general from.
