| TimmyAintLeavin Jan 26 NIGGARD PLEASE | |
| Divis1onbyzer0 Jan 26 On January 15, 1999, David Howard, a white aide to Anthony A. Williams, the black mayor of Washington, D.C., used "niggardly" in reference to a budget. This apparently upset one of his black colleagues (identified by Howard as Marshall Brown), who interpreted it as a racial slur and lodged a complaint. As a result, on January 25 Howard tendered his resignation, and Williams accepted it.[1] However, after pressure from the gay community (of which Howard was a member) an internal review into the matter was brought about, and the mayor offered Howard the chance to return to his position as Office of the Public Advocate on February 4. Howard refused but accepted another position with the mayor instead, insisting that he did not feel victimized by the incident. On the contrary, Howard felt that he had learned from the situation. "I used to think it would be great if we could all be colorblind. That's naïve, especially for a white person, because a white person can afford to be colorblind. They don't have to think about race every day. An African American does."[1] It had been speculated that this incident inspired Philip Roth's novel The Human Stain,[2] though Roth has stated his source was an incident in the career of Melvin Tumin.[3] Public responseThe Howard incident led to a national debate in the U.S., in the context of racial sensitivity and political correctness, on whether use of niggardly should be avoided. Some observers noted, however, that the "national debate" was made up almost entirely of commentators defending use of the word. As James Poniewozik wrote in Salon, the controversy was "an issue that opinion-makers right, left and center could universally agree on." He wrote that "the defenders of the dictionary" were "legion, and still queued up six abreast."[4] Julian Bond, then chairman of the NAACP, deplored the offense that had been taken at Howard's use of the word. "You hate to think you have to censor your language to meet other people's lack of understanding", he said. "David Howard should not have quit. Mayor Williams should bring him back — and order dictionaries issued to all staff who need them."[5] | |
| SeeingThingz Jan 27 "I like comic books and occasionally go to comic book stores. The predominent race in these stores is white, followed by asians. Not many blacks there. Am I a racist for partaking in a social space of a comic book store which isn't optimally diverse? Am I racist for not striving to as a specific goal to go places which have an egalitarian distribution of races?" No, you're not racist because you have no control over the racial spectrum of comic books and your choice to patronize the comic book store is not an endorsement of the limited racial diversity any more than going to a liquor store with a limited selection of gum is an endorsement of the limited selection of gum. I agree with the origins of peoples comfort zones being based in familiarity. My problem is not the lack of exposure of most people, its the fact that once you state you have preference for a particular race or that you don't date certain races, you've closed yourself to possibility. Maybe racist isn't the term for this type of close-mindedness but its very much related to racism because it allows ignorance to flourish. Another point is that, white, black, asian, hispanic, whatever you may be there it at least once celebrity of a practically every race that the general population consider attractive. I feel like if you really think there are no people of an entire race that you could possibly be attracted to, then there's something wrong with you. | |
| Rodney69 Jan 27 While using the word niggardly should be accepted, you also have to be smart when you are in the public sphere. You can't claim to not realize the connotations of the word, there are so many other words he could have used instead. No one really uses that word anymore. I don't believe in censorship of any kind, but there's censorship and then there's just being smart. | |
| LisaSings Jan 27 Indians smell weird to me. I am a racist. | |

You're just fucking stupid and haven't slightest idea what racism really means. The use of the word "diversity" is a guise. You feel like your black ass is owed a date with any race you want. You have no respect for personal preference, so you categorize people as racist. You're another retard in a long line of dumb niggers that think you're owed something - Like a date with a white chick or a Mexican.
| Fat-Fat-Fat Jan 27 Right, like, how many times can this guy be told that a superficial preference (which is what LOOKS are and the physical attraction to those looks) is S U P E R F I C I A L? | |
| Chaeddd Jan 27 I think there must be many people who are secret racists, when it comes to dating. There are plenty of white people who have never gone on 1 date with 1 Black person. Many of these YTs say they are not racist. | |
| dorkside1784 Jan 27 I'd also like to add that Jewish is not a race, it's a denomination. With that said, is any Jewish person that only wants to date another Jewish person an anti-semitic? Your bullshit stance that labels people racist because of personal preference is nothing more than an entitlement rant. | |
| drunkenworm Jan 27 "I'm not racist, my best friend is black." | |
| Fat-Fat-Fat Jan 27 If everyone you're not attracted to is inferior, then we're all racist against all races. According to OP's logic. | |
| SeeingThingz Jan 27
You've got your wires crossed. Its not everyone that you're not attracted to, because that would require taking people on their own individual merit. When you say you're not attracted to an entire race, thats is suggesting that an entire race must consist solely of unattractive people. Do you understand Fatx3? I do appreciate you fighting so hard to prove to yourself you're not racist. Its an admirable venture.
| Fat-Fat-Fat Jan 27 I'm not fighting to say I'm not racist. Whether I am racist is irrelevant. I'm fighting to say you're an idiot. | |
| TimmyAintLeavin Jan 27 YOUR WHITE SO U MUST B RACIST | |
| Fat-Fat-Fat Jan 27 If someone has never been attracted to another of a certain race, it's a safe bet they likely won't ever be attracted to a person of that race. That's just averages. So saying "I've never been attracted to a ____ guy" can also be said as "I'm not attracted to ____ guys". Splitting hairs over phrasing to search for racism where it doesn't necessarily exist must be a really difficult complex to have. :( | |
| TimmyAintLeavin Jan 27 I remember when NiggaRachi used to post here. | |

Dating is a racist and sexist game. That much is clear. Just look at the dynamics. But, it's one place where we can get away with it.
physical attraction is de facto superficial, unless you are basing attraction on other expressions of the physical than the appearance of the surface of the body, which is rare. you know, maybe you will seek out athletes who have proven themselves in sport because you are attracted to athletic ability. that would a physical attraction of sorts, but the usual one is just based on the external surfaces of the body rather than on bodility capacities or abilities.
