i don't define myself as a hipster in the fashion sense.

i might listen to ~some~ of what people ~might~ describe as "hipster" music sometimes and partake in ironic events !unintentionally!, but it is not a goal of mine.

well, i guess i see your point, but...the dead is an idea of a single idea or entity..

kind of like the term fascism 

or

religion

christianity

if i was to speak of the dead as a group.. i'd maybe say the dead are coming

but the dead is dead.

that's like saying you're talking about a group of people as a single entity. it doesn't work that way in grammar. hence, subject-verb agreement.
