It seems like there are far more guys than girls on this site (from what I keep hearing) so I'm curious if anybody has a way of finding out the ratio of males to females.

Click on the _____ users online on the top left of the screen. You can filter out between sex and orientation.

Like right now, 3500 out of 9800 online are women.

Granted, it only tells you the stats of the moment. But it's pretty consistent, around 35% are women

If I were a casual reader of these forums I think I might be convinced by DiscoJer's argument which boldly claims that for every three males on okcupid there is one female.   Fortunately I work here and I can look this stuff up.

So I now give you the ACTUAL ratio of Guys to Girls on OkCupid.  I queried only people who logged in in the last 56 days, and I tossed gay people out of the stat since their numbers are pretty even and they don't really affect what we're talking about anyway.

So what is the number?  1.37 Males to 1 Female.  That means 4 males for every 3 females.

^I don't doubt that your numbers are correct, I just don't know if they are measuring the right data. I'd be curious to see it broken down by age, and availability.

For example, I can see that within 50 miles of me among people aged 21-26, there's about a 3:1 ratio of straight single men to straight single women - 59 men and 18 women. Not to mention, spam/fake profiles are almost always female, right?

35% women means for every 2 males, there is one women. Discojer's actual numbers give the ratio 1.8:1

You are absolutely correct and I retract my 3 to 1 statement and replace it with 2 to 1.

matt_usc:  I'll try and do more than just gender/orientation, but the query would take a lot longer to run and I have some other things to write by the end of the day.  Maybe if I'm bored over the weekend I'll figure out the sql and run an age/available breakdown.  Unfortunately because of the way things are in the DB I can't easily add region to that metric otherwise I'd do that too.

do consider that the difference of genders does not specify what sexual orientation they favor.

That's quite interesting, but it does seem dramatically different to the people who are usually online. I frequently check the ratio online (since I don't have anything else to do here), and it's usually 30-35% women.

Like right now as I type, it's 31% women, 64% men (probably skewed a lot because it's Saturday night).

Actually though, if you fixed it so more than more than 1000 matches could be displayed, then people could figure it out on their own using the match function. As it is I can only do 100 miles, which turns up 1427 women and 2239 men. That's with photos.

Wihout photos, it gets more interesting. It jumps to 5113 and 6203 within 100 miles. Which is far more even, but also far more likely to be fake.

so what is the update on this issue? database wise girls vs guys vs homosexuals and bi's?
Hobbyist123

There are two genders. Male and female.

Homosexuals and bi's, while wrong, still fit into one of the two above categories.

It's mostly men. And the women that are here usually have an attitude problem or want to get married right away.

^ wow, bitter much? o_ O

NonVisibleMan

Jun 22, 2008

Yeah, pretty much.

Lots of bitter women, here, too.

I'm sorry, but if you're looking for a soul mate or whatnot, or even if you aren't - "haha, I'm sarcastic and will probably put you down, but that's because I'm so hella awesome and everyone loves me" is prima facie evidence of some kind of attitude problem.

Well, since the point is matching up men with women and vice-versa, it's best to just drop gays from the issue, since they are matching with each other (and they only seem to be 5% of OKC anyway), not the opposite sex.

Anyway, I think at the very least, the ratio in the database vs the ratio online suggests men & women use OKC differently.

And personally, why not be bitter? Sure, it's not attractive, but no one wanted to talk or date me when I wasn't bitter. At least being bitter is a way to vent. Bottling up stuff inside isn't very good.

Indeed.

Men use it cause they don't get hit on, are tired of getting rejected IRL, and try to find someone.

Women use it so they can filter out all the attention they get and find THE PERFECT MAN.

What about the ratio of messages written by men to those written by women?

And the time spent online by men compared to women?

I love numbers!

Women almost NEVER message men, except to perhaps say "thanks! lol" to the first five guys who msg her.

Wow, that hasn't been my experience at all.

I find that most of the guys on here are trying to get laid and most of the girls either fall into the above categories or are just looking for friends.

Granted, the first five guys to message a girl on here are usually the ones who add okc's match function along with their cameras, rope, and vans full of candy.

THat ratio of Male to female sounds about right, and probably better than most sites out there.
