Does anyone know of a way to access the body of an IM contact so that I can look up an email address that was given to me?

I don't think you can.  In fact, I think you lose the beginning of a conversation the longer it goes one.

Do you remember who the user was?

One of the main reasons why, if I'm going to chat with an OkC user, I generally prefer to go chat on one of the other free chat services rather than here.

Is there *really* no way to recover your history from an IM on here?  :O

Not that I know of.  It's some infernal flash-based thing.  I suppose it might keep something in your browser's cache folder, but I've never been that motivated to go sleuthing.

I just did a test and then went spelunking through the browser cache and couldn't find anything.

I've found some files in my browser history that don't tie up with anything on OKC, and I'm kind of assuming they're the message files, but when I try to open them they all end up at the sign in page.  :(

Oh, the IM client does produce some files in the cache, but I couldn't find any that had a chat log that I could see, at least not in plain text.  In the browsers I tested (Opera and Firefox), it looks like it creates the following files:

  1. General configuration file (english.xml)
  2. Script that embeds the flash (flashobject.js)
  3. The IM flash app itself (ic.swf)
  4. The html that creates the IM window (wm.htm)
  5. Resource file generated when IM launches (wmWindowOpened.htm)
  6. Thumbnail of calling user ([long-integer].jpeg)
  7. A bunch of files which appear to be generated on short intervals, presumably as the IM client continuously polls for a connection. (I didn't save these so don't have the name.  They're all about 27 bytes)

Yes, that sounds about right from here, lots of 27 byte files.  :(  Damn and blast it!  I'm using Firefox 3.0.1, which does all sorts of lovely things, but it can't seem to do this, unfortunately.  :(  I've written to Admin as I'm a bit peeved about it to be honest.

For what it's worth, OkCupid didn't write the IM application - it's a 3rd-party thing. (www.userplane.com)

From what I can gather, it doesn't support logging, and apparently a number of their (Userplane's) customers have been asking for this too.

Going forward, I would heartily recommend using an offsite IM service for various reasons.  The key ones for me are A) lack of logging, B) horrific emoticons you can't turn off, C) line-length limitations, and D) reliance on flash.

I use Trillian so I can chat with people on various services without having to install a bunch of resource-hogging proprietary IM applications.

I'm new to this thing and I need to know how to im someone.  I know to click on the icon (bubble) when I see it but what if I dont see one?  Is there a way to do it from their homepage?

Thanks for the heads up on Trillian, I can see an afternoon of downloading ahead of me!  lol  What a wonderful idea.  :)

On Windows, Miranda IM does the same thing with even less resource-hogging and is published under GPL.

It has plug-in support for all major protocols, Jabber/XMPP, IRC and encryption. What it doesn't have is a lot of eye candy; that alone makes it preferable to the competition for me.

I assume that if there isn't a bubble it either means that they're offline or that they have their IM off.

Either that or they don't meet OkC's minimum standard for IM'ing someone.

See Chris Coyne's journal post below for details:

I"m getting the same thing though it was working just an hour ago too, I think they are doing some changes with the IM and it's acting up for everyone.

IM History got relocated to a new submenu today.I note that most of this topic is from before the IM history became an available personal archive in November!

IM History should correctly take you to the IM history page now and not to the login page. Sorry for the bug!
