Simple statements of site problems

I'm having journal posts just not show up, sometimes for over an hour. It's really confusing. This site is farblondget . |
|

I'm having the friend % problem. Match and enemy levels are the same but some people who were 88-90% are now 15-18%. Others went up a little and some went down 20-30%. No one is past 78-80%. Things really went kinda nuts... |

Certain image servers weren't working for a while last night, but seem to be working now. (ie cdn.okcimg.com) I did send them a message about this.

as pathetic as this might sound, my one and only test hasn't been approved for release for almost 3 months. (no explanation has been given by OKC, its self, about why that is; no explanation, or no suggestions for what I can do to make everything kosher for them.) |

I've been on this site since 2005 and this isn't the first time
this site acted screwy. The problem this time is that it has been
more rampant than ever, and I blame it on the constant tweaking
done by the people who operate this thing. They always did some
tweaking every once in a while and it always resulted in at least
one problem. One example would be the journal posts disappearing. I
remember an incident a while ago when I wanted to comment on a
couple of posts CyberGirl567 did. I looked for them and they
weren't there. I messaged her about it and even she didn't
understand what had happened. I managed to solve the problem by
changing the address on the address bar to the correct one. It
worked, but only temporarily. I checked my posts again a while
later, and they were gone. I checked again later and they were
back. I didn't understand what had happened and I didn't message
the operators of the site because I knew they'll never get back to
me. Either they don't give a shit about what happens in this site
or they're smoking too much crack to care, but they have to realize
that many people here don't like the constant changes in this site
because they always make things worse. They should just leave
things alone. Things are fine the way they are. They don't need
that much changing.
Good point about the MatchMe tests. It seems only in the last couple of days I managed to get 100% on the tests (I'm too much of a gentleman to reveal the names, so don't ask!). I think I only got as high as 80%. I thought it was like some sort of miracle that I had a perfect match. I guess it was too good to be true, which seems to be the story of my life. |

Major, major increases in
4ea BB ISPs, 5ea Intel boxes, 5ea browsers, 4ea OSs... all function properly on other sites. Only OkC presents these problems. Contact me for more specifics otherwise I'll save ink/my fingers. BTW the increases are increasing to the point of matching blazing fast dialup surfing!

I understand people being annoyed (like dmed) but please try to keep this thread focused on current problems -- and not going off on OKC . I would like to keep it a clean & easy to read resource for them to see what problems the site is having. Muchos gracias :) dirtydogintex: I have also noticed the very slow page load-ins. ESPECIALLY on the big screen of Site Activity/What people are up to. I have a cable modem and I timed it this afternoon: 4 minutes to finish. Also, clicking on menus at the top takes longer than usual to respond on that page. I need to hover over them for 20 seconds (just timed it) before it "sees" where I am and drops down the choices. |

I cannot change my settings on the Site Activity/What People Are Up To.
Script errors. |

The Dating Persona Test won't update on my test results when I retake it - but all the others seem to, including the politics test. I would really appreciate it that could be corrected so I can update the test which is wildly out of date since I took it in Jan 06. People change. :) |

Re: the script errors, I would first look at what sort of add-ins you have on your browser (3rd-party toolbars, popup blockers, Firefox add-ins like flash blockers, script blockers etc, and security utilities that mess with the browser like parental filters, anti-spam tools, etc.) Re: the slow page loads, I think the 2 main culprits are A) high system load (check the upper-left of your screen for how many are currently online and B) very slow offsite ad-servers and trackers. As OkC adds more and more advertising networks, it slows down the page loads. (Oh - and a subset of item "A" are slow OkC image servers - which was really bad yesterday evening) Secondarily, OkC uses lots and lots of "AJAX" web techniques, and that stuff unfortunately requires a good bit of horsepower to run all those scripts and background content updating. If you're like a lot of people whose computers are already bogged-down due to poor maintenance and a bunch of junk software (ie slow A/V utils, toolbars, animated themes, news tickers, weather monitors, bla bla bla) then it's likely to make matters much worse. Cosmocutie: Go to http://www.okcupid.com/settings, scroll down to "Language Settings", make sure only "English" is listed under "I speak" and "Show me OkCupid in". |

Secondarily, OkC uses lots and lots of "AJAX" web techniques, and that stuff unfortunately requires a good bit of horsepower to run all those scripts and background content updating. Lean, mean machines sans bloatware/other background crap. Even so I've been shutting down down BOINC thinking the extra cycles would benefit OkC. No such luck - all I'm doing is hurting my RAC. (BOINC projects have low priorities as far as windoze is concerned.) sfguyyy : Do you think we'll see CPU requirements lower, as they were in the past, or are the current levels here for the foreseeable future? |

A great deal of the wonky behaviour was also catalogued in my post in this forum "something wrong with match percentages". I'll play, though, and make any updates I have to this thread. My newest observation is that my own stats are now incorrect. For example, the stalks per week suddenly changed to half what it had been a few hours ago, and the record of the number of tests taken is completely wrong: 81 instead of the actual 5 tests I've taken. Thanks for trying to consolidate observations into a single thread! |

dirtydog - not sure. Did you mean "cpu requirements for getting a snappy OkCupid experience"? I can't answer that, because I don't work for them. However I have heard from some OkC employees some occasional abstract rumblings about possibly unwinding some of the complexities at some point. For example, the scripted tabs in the old user interface that often resulted in not being able to see someone's journal entries (you click on the journal link and it always tells you they have 0 journal entries) was fixed in the last UI change. Another development is that browser vendors are working on increasing the performance of their javascript engines. The latest Firefox and IE are supposed to increase javascript performance substantially - Opera always was fast but they keep tweaking theirs too. But in general the site architects are always the ones who make decisions about what tradeoffs they're willing to make. A counter-example would be the screen width - OkC apparently feels that there are enough people still using 800 pixel or narrower screens, that if the default screen elements had a minimum width wider than that, it would turn those people away. So we have a lot of wasted horizontal space on high-res displays.

OkC has, once again, purged the journal comment history, so you have nothing to see in "View my comments" older than a few hours.. |

I've noticed some problems recently with messages going missing or being delayed for a long period of time.
I also don't understand the purpose behind a lot of the code to the site. If you look on the pictures page there's a bit of code like...
if (Math.random() < 1.0) {

The GoatofMendez's post is another nice example of another thing broken here. Here's a small bug: when you are reviewing your "votes & notes", there are links to the previous and next pages both at the top and bottom of current page. However, only the bottom ones are actually links, the top ones are just text that fool you into thinking they are links. :P |

Here are mine. - Cupid used to switch to what I presume was Dutch a few weeks ago. I'd change it back to English, click on a link and notice it's in Dutch again. (Firefox 2, Kubuntu running on an old Dell laptop.) Now I'm using Camino on a Mac Notebook and have no problem with this. - my Match percentages have been through the wringer. Used to be 93% match, 92% friend and 1% enemy with the BF. Went overnight to 93%, 86% and 1%. Seem to have similar problems with other users, but I'll be damned if I know what the exact variation is -- haven't memorised anyone else's match scores. ;-) - everyone who has recently taken my MatchMe has scored 100%. |
|
I'm making this post just to give OKC an easy place to come to and see what's currently a site issue.
If anyone else would like to add in their short summaries of problems they see, please do! :)
Please keep this free of slams on OKC. It would be cool to have this all be easy to read (and therefore faster to see what to fix!) and not have to wade through rants.
Ok, this is what I got at the moment:
* MatchMe Tests: Monday & Tuesday, takers of my MatchMe Test are coming in at 100%. I don't think this is correct. For example, two recent takers match me normally at 86% and 58%. I have been on here since February 2007, and I don't think I have ever had anyone test at 100%. For the 86% person to test at 100% is a slim possibility, but the 58%? No way hoosay.
* Distances: People at one point recently were many, many thousands of miles away (like 760,000). Then 99,999. They seem almost correct now, but are still off. For example, I have someone favorited who lives in Montague, MA (I live in Pittsfield, MA.) Montague is really 53 miles from me, but he is listed as 36 miles away. Another is in Jupiter, FL, and listed at 1,141 miles away, but is actually 1,379 miles away. Now I'm getting my mileage from MapQuest. Maybe OKC just measures through a straight line, not using road miles?
* I have read others saying the Match/Friend/Enemy percentages have recently changed dramatically. This I cannot confirm but hopefully others will chime in here. The ones I have looked at seem as before, but I didn't have the percentages memorized, so I can't say for certain.
That's all I got. Thanks OKC for fixing the other blips :)
