The instant messaging part of this site does not seem to work with my ATT Samsung Focus using Windows Phone 7. When I click the blue chat bubble next to anyone's name, a little load bar flies by but nothing happens. I know this feature works with iPhone so is it app related? I assumed maybe it had to do with Flash, etc.

Any help is appreciated.

You need to port the Flash app to your new phone. There is a SIMLOCK key in the Windows 7 registry that needs to be unlocked. You will need to call AT&T on how to do this (after you port the Flash app).

Thanks but after searching quite a bit for a working flash app on wp7, I can't seem to find anything. Do you happen to have a link for it?

Due to licensing issues, you have to call AT&T for the download link to get the SYMLINK to unlock the SIMLOCK key (after you have ported the Flash app).

Sorry, wish I could. Hands are kind of tied here.

Vance187: Please don't pay attention to anything polyafx writes here - you can pretty much assume anything he writes is BS.

I don't have any personal experience with Windows Phone 7, but I can tell you a few general things about the IM here.

I assume you are using the "full" site, and not the mobile site - since the simpler mobile site (m.okcupid.com) doesn't have an IM feature.

The IM here does NOT require Flash. However it does use javascript (also known as ECMAscript) and there is a wide variation in how various browsers implement that.

There is a possibility that the IM here has not been tested with Internet Explorer in Win Phone 7, and/or that it's just incompatible. There are some dedicated OkCupid smartphone apps, though at present only for iPhone/iPad Touch/iPad, or Android.

There are also a couple of 3rd-party IM clients that will work on OkCupid, but to my knowledge they have not been ported-to or tested on WinPhone 7. If you want more info on those for future reference, post back here.

Hi,

Thank you for your accurate input and knowledge. You are correct in assuming I was referring to the full version of the site and not mobile. Unfortunately, I think you might also be correct in that it may not be tested properly for wp7 since I know of other javascripts that run fine on this wp7.

If you could provide those references and any other advice to making this work, it would be appreciated.

My first suggestion would be to send the staff a feedback on this via the "Send us feedback" link near the bottom of any page here, giving the same details you provided above, and your experience. That way, if they are not already aware, they will know that some users are trying to use it on that platform without success.

Alternatively, you can just send a link to this forum post, which might be easier for you to type/paste in to the comment box.

Regarding the 3rd-party options, this forum topic discusses an open-source, 3rd-party IM client for Windows that can use OkCupid IM via a plugin written by a user here. They may at some point decide to make a version of that plugin that works on Win Phone 7, if there is enough demand for it. The homepage for the regular Windows version of the plugin is here.

Also, one of the users has written a basic FAQ on OkCupid IM, you can see it here.
