I've already figured out that after you sign off, your account will continue to say "Online Now" (both on your profile picture and if someone searches for people that are now online) for about an hour or so.  But lately mine seems to never show me as offline anymore.

I have no idea how long it's been doing this.  I just noticed a few days ago that it shows you as online for the next hour or so, but this morning it still showed me as online even though the last time I had signed on was about 7 hours ago.  When I went to bed, I clicked "Sign Out", closed my browser and shut my laptop (which breaks the wireless connection).  The only thing I can think of is that I installed the Adroid app a few weeks ago.  Could that be causing the problem?

This bugs me for two reasons.  First, I get worried that if someone is nervous about sending a message they may want to wait for me to sign off to do it.  Second, it looks like I spend all day and night on this site.

Any thoughts on this?

BTW I figured this out when I was at a friends house.  She had logged on to the site and noticed that I was 'online'.

Joey31415, yeah its a reported problem in the sign-off. The system just takes a while to check and update statuses. As far as I am aware OKC staff are aware of it and working on the problem. I just think it is too many users on the server that it slows down the status updating and the best solution may not be feasible at this time.

Actually, it's probably the Android app in this case.

Android has this "feature" where you basically don't have a direct way to close an application.

If it's a communication application that automatically and periodically sends/receives (the OkC app has to do that to keep its status updated while it's running), Android may keep it running forever unless you specifically close it, ie with one of the 3rd-party task-killer utilities available for Android, or by rebooting the device.

The good thing is that your battery-life will probably improve after you start killing off apps like that that keep periodically using your internet connection while you're sleeping and so on. :-)

Just to follow up, and I see someone already figured it out.  It was the Android App.  It wasn't listed in my "running services" so I didn't notice it.  I found it by going to "Manage Applications" then clicking on the "running" tab.  Hit the Force Close button, waited a half hour and I showed as off line.  Luckily the only time I use the mobile app is when I get an email.  Since OKC doesn't send the full text in the email, I can log on to the app and read it there.  I just have to remember to force close it when I'm done.

ETA,  I see I'm still logged in under my friend's account.

fayrytale:  The problem the original poster had has already been identified in the following comments.

Do you have an Android smartphone or an iPhone?

Has NOTHING to do with any Android app. I though the same thing about my iphone app, but no.

I don't have any of the apps, have been logged out for 14 hours and the site still shows me logged in.

This was going on for months and I finally disabled my account.

Problem still exists months later.

It once had me logged in and "online now" for a week.

All that proves is that YOUR problem has nothing to do with the apps.  I installed the Android app and I was permanently logged on, killing app logged me out (as did finally uninstalling it).

Just because you are having the same problem and don't have the app, doesn't mean the app wasn't causing my problem.

BTW, I'm confused.  You said "I though the same thing about my iphone app" and then said "I don't have any of the apps"...those two statements are contradictory.

Right. Sorry.

I initially had the iPhone app and I also thought the problem was caused by it.

When I deleted the app, the problem seemed to go away.

For a day.

Then, no more apps in play, the problem persisted.

But yes, perhaps your problem was only related to the Android app.

I just don't get this though.

I sign out. And there I am... days later...

p.s. its not this account I'm using that is the issue. this account was created to test whether I could sign out of my real successfully...

Are you signing out 'properly' or just turning off the device/closing the browser without first explicitly logging-off?

Cookies enabled? No browser add-ins, toolbars or security utilities blocking them?

Using "invisible mode", or "privacy mode" or "stealth mode"? If so, try logging in normally, and log out normally.

I have the same problem. It started when I used my friend's iphone app to look at OKC. Then she deleted the app, and I was offline for a short while... but then online again. I have repeatedly tried to delete all my cookies in all my browsers on both my computers, stay offline for awhile... once or twice that worked, but now it doesn't anymore. I've been 'online' for about 2 weeks now.

litebrite44: Have you used any of the Android or iOS OkCupid mobile apps yourself, ie not on your friend's device?

Her device may still have the app on it despite her belief to the contrary.

There could be some other explanations, ie browser add-ins or cookie settings etc.

No, I have never used it elsewhere. I'm a programmer and I checked her phone last weekend, the app is gone. Like I said I delete my cookies every time. Let me know if you have other suggestions.

litebrite44: When I viewed your profile just now it does not show you as logged-in.

Which browsers are you using? Sounds like they are holding on to cached-content or something.

I do not see either the "online now" banner on your profile picture or an indication in your "Last Online" field. If the site thought you were currently logged-in, that field would read "Online now". This is how it looks here (bear in mind my timezone is PST):

Last Online: Today – 10:37am

Thanks sfguyyy, you're right it seems to have logged me off. I wonder if the problem is over or just temporary. Should we do an experiment? I'm online now obviously... but let me know if you see me online later today or whenever, if you feel so inclined.

Thanks for the good news... It has been like this before though, so I'll just have to wait and see. I'll be offline again for awhile. I'll see if it keeps up. Thank you again :)

Having the same problem. Never used any mobile apps. I stay online apparently a few hours past logging off. Tried this with Firefox and IExplorer. I log off by clicking on 'sign out'. Signing out will change the screen (some advertisement), but I can click the browser's back button from there and resume my OKC session. In other words, I never got truly logged out. The latter sounds likely related to the always online problem.
