I don't know if you've ever seen these movies or not, but the Back to the Future trilogy deals with time travel as well, and actually does a good job of showing what minor, unintentional changes as well as major alterations can do to time, both good and bad.

I'm more inclined to agree with William Gibson's vision of the future, a la Neuromancer and the Bridge trilogy, than 1984.
