Also, absolutely anything by Neil Gaiman or Cormac McCarthy.  Gaiman writes some amazing books focused around modern re-weavings of ancient stories, and McCarthy is one of the best authors currently living- also, has some of the most brutal descriptions of gore I've ever read, check out Blood
