I am quite partial to Godel , Escher , Bach : An Eternal Golden Braid , by Douglas Hofstadter , a book concerning many and sundry things ; a somewhat challenging tome, I acknowledge, but Hofstadter's engaging style and infectious enthusiasm make it pleasant going.

Just reading the Wikipedia article about Godel Escher Bach and noted how relevant two paragraphs of it was to this very discussion: "Through illustration and analysis, the book discusses how self-reference and formal rules allow systems to acquire meaning despite being made of "meaningless"
