its fantasy, the basics are each of the 8 books are about one of the Madger incarnations of Immortality thay represent big things that effect mortal life. Death, Time, Fate, Nature, War, and good/evil. there are also Lesser incarnations that work under the greater ones.

WIS, I also read Piers Anthony as a kid, but thought there were too many books in the Xanth series; preferred his Incarnations of Immortality.
