Tolkein invented this
myth - I've heard he intended LotR to be a kind of mythological
history for England (I don't know how authoritative this view is).
So what it tells us is what Tolkein would like our culture to be
like. We have real myths in our culture, they're just not
necessarily ones Tolkein

Listen, I like fantasy as much as the next computer geek. Elves are
cool. Ladies dig dragons. Great, whatever. There's a reason it's
called fantasy and not the stuff Tolkein wrote about.

What do you think is the general height of a
dwarf (Tolkein or D&D dwarves, primarily) and then, what do you
think would be a general height of a typical halfling (Hobbits to
those of you who have not heard the non-Tolkein name)?

This test refers to Tolkein as Low-brow, doesn't it? I'd probably
have to argue with that, if it does. Sure, the plagiarists who have
followed Tolkein (and usually followed poorly) have reduced that
portion of the genre to something akin to garbage with their
repetitiveness.

Tolkein. The two were very
friendly.Tolkein was a committed Christian too, and though the
'Lord of the Rings' doesn't give us holy water and a cross, all the
symbolism is present. It is just that Tolkein had too much class
and too much education ... were in Lewis and Tolkein's day a canny and

I usually made my own settings -well that, and
I hate the idea of fantasy races, with the exception of elves which
I use in my setting as Grimm Fairy Tale type fairies, wild,
inconsistent, dangerous and insane by human standards, not very
good choices for PC's, and certainly not Tolkein-ish snobs.
