poems tend to be more free verse but there usually is some sort of structure, however loose. Free verse can be very well thought out - it does actually take effort to choose words that create a vivid feeling or imagery. Some of my journal entries blur the line between poetry and prose, for example.

I really only write poetry when I'm compelled to, otherwise prose is my vice. I have to feel a poem, otherwise it just isn't worth writing. Style and form just evolve from the feeling--sometimes I go free verse, sometimes a sonnet, sometimes ballad verse, or iambic pentameter.
