video games are
art, however. For starters, take a look at the arguments in defense
of the idea. Like the one from the most recent Game Informer. All
too often, people mistake some part of a video game for the whole
and attempt to claim that the resultant product (the game) is art
because some part

we are simply mapping the flow of

while following the performance art model: developer --code->

art structure we have the gamer as performer and audience.

While I viewed video games with the same
level of appreciation as the average gamer to begin with,
eventually I began to see video games for what they are: art in
motion. Interactive, art in motion to be exact. Unfortunately,
video games suffer the same stigma that sequential art fairs: that

blame game developers. These games are all
pretty much grind games (EvE a bit less so, but still a lot). Chug
through the motions and collect golden widgets to achieve the ever
increasingly powerful MacGuffins of Power. So you have a legion of
geeks (who are often better at math) playing the game by

I really thought the art in Game was more boring than anything
else.I didn't even notice the art in A Game of You, and it was a
very nice break from all the ugly crap in some of the other books.
I barely made it through Brief Lives, and found the art so
distracting that I'm not sure I remember the

The only art I've felt that I really disliked was that in A Game of
You, and a few bits in Preludes and Nocturnes.Heh. It's funny you
should say that, because I always felt that McManus' art in A Game
of You was the most unattractive of the whole lot.

There
is no such thing as "just" a game. Games are the things that teach
us how to think, how to solve problems, how to react to new
situations, and how to be human beings. Games are applied
mathematics as an art form, and art is one of the highest reaches
humans can aspire toward.

"But videogames are like handing out boxes of
crayons at the entrance of a gallery. If you can control the art,
then you're influencing it, when the point is that it's supposed to
influence you ."-Stuart CampbellGames involve creative skills, but
they're not art.

A piece of art and a game (usually) always remain the
same, but the viewer/player's experience may change.Yeah, but
that's because the viewer changes, not the work of art
itself. That's how art can act as a commentary on someone's
life, too - they regard it differently in light of fresh

seem to be talking about video games as an art I
may as well start with that. To me, video games can be art in its
own respect. After all we do consider graphic imagery such as
paintings and scupltures and what not, as works of art. We as a
society also consider literature and poems works of art.

art. But then, if you had an audience in to watch the
performance, you could call anything performance art, and that's
where we get muppets like Tracey Emin.Someone playing a game would
be really lousy art. And it doesn't make the game itself art
- it makes performing for an audience art

Just because something is considered art by some doesn't mean it is
considered art by me, the paint splashes on a canvas is considered
art by the art world, I don't however consider that art. Wii
