How about a...museum?

Museums are great places for first dates! You can walk around together and talk about the exhibits, but it's not awkward or rude to wander off on your own for a few minutes.

go somewhere that you enjoy, but still offers lots of things to do, I personally enjoy museums and planetariums and the like, and it gives you plenty to look at, while still gives them the opportunity to be in a safe public environment and you can just talk if they aren't interested in the exhibits.

), museums especially w/traveling exhibits like "Body Works", a night at the opera, stage production / theatre, comedy club, zoo (go to monkey cage to visit the kinfolk), dinner at the only table in the middle of nowhere on a bluff overlooking whatever, wine tasting, Irish pub with live music
