last summer toward the end of my trip, but perhaps I had picked the
wrong book as I just couldn't get into it.

I think the key to enjoying a movie
that is based on a book is not reading the book. Or at least having
significant distance between reading the book and watching the
movie. For example, I loved Sense & Sensibility, but never read
the book.
