My self-summary
Write a little about yourself. Just a paragraph will do.
**Honest upfront TL;DR - Just home for the first time in a year and a bit, only staying for a month. Basically just wanna get to know my town again (What, there are happy hours now??) and have fun**

Hey there, I'm Darren, a Canadian living in the Netherlands, doing my master's in ecology, and trying to learn Dutch. If you don't mind receiving replies with terrible grammar and spelling then I would love to practice. Otherwise if bad spelling and grammar is a turn off, well we'll have to stick to English for now. :)

I'm pretty laid back and introverted, so for me happiness is usually something quiet and relaxed. I like good food, long books and longer vacations. My fondest memories usually involve any or all of those, like eating apple strudel at a cafe in Vienna, or swimming in a bog in Estonia, things like that.
I love the outdoors and I'm always up for a run or hike, or an adventure to the park or a museum or another city.
Of course there are days when I like to sit at home and do nothing but read, listen to some music, watch TV, or play video games.

What else, what else:
I try and laugh at everything and not take things too seriously.
I can be sarcastic to a fault.
I'm a cat person.
I'm usually pretty quiet and would rather think about what to say before actually saying something, but if you get me talking about something I like then I can go on for a while.
I'm always interested in hearing people's opinions on things, even if they don't mesh up with my own.
I'm easily impressed by anyone that's kind, a little bit weird, and really passionate about something, bonus points if its something I'm also interested in.

If you want to know more just send me a message. I'm actually rather friendly.
What I’m doing with my life
Don’t overthink this one; tell us what you’re doing day-to-day.
I'm an aspiring biologist and have my BSc in Animal Biology from the University of British Columbia in Vancouver (where I grew up). I'm doing my Masters in Systems Ecology and Conservation here at the university in Wageningen.

I love working outdoors with animals so hopefully I'll get the chance to do that here, and I'm playing around with the thought of doing some work in South Africa (or Mongolia... or Costa Rica) later on in my degree. As much as I love science I have no intent on being an academic forever and I'm hoping to eventually land some kind of career in wildlife management or conservation.
I’m really good at
Go on, brag a little (or a lot). We won’t judge.
- Learning things
- Scrabble and Crosswords
- Useless Trivia
- Being a socially awkward penguin
- Wondering about obscure facts and then spending hours of time following up on said fact which usually leads to some other odd fact. Its a vicious cycle.
The first things people usually notice about me
I’m an empty essay… fill me out!
Either my beard, my eyelashes, or that I'm quiet.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food

Food: I like all kinds of food, doesn't matter, put it on a plate in front of me and I'll eat it. Asian, French, Arabic, Indian, you name it. I've finally started to learn how to cook well since moving over here, so I'm super excited about that!

TV: Game of Thrones, House of Cards, and Archer are my top three shows now.

Music: The National, Fitz and the Tantrums, Death Cab, Arcade Fire, Stars, that's the sort of stuff I could listen to all day.

Movies: Any action/thriller/sci-fi movie, or any sort of historical fiction. Plus rom-coms are a guilty pleasure. The last really good movie I saw was probably Her.

Books: I had to leave all my books when I moved, still trying to get used to this e-reader thing. I'll read anything that catches my eye. Hosseni, Marquez, also the nerd in me loves fantasy authors like Salvatore or Martin. Any historical fiction. Also Orwell, Bradbury, Asimov, stuff like that.

Video Games: Definitely RPGs, strategy and adventure games. Pokemon, Elder Scrolls games, Civilization, Zelda, Smash Bros., I could go on...
The six things I could never do without
Think outside the box. Sometimes the little things can say a lot.
-Friends and Family
-A desire to learn new things
-Fresh Fruit
I spend a lot of time thinking about
Global warming, lunch, or your next vacation… it’s all fair game.
Grad school, life in Europe, thesis topics, stuff related to that.
Where I should go on my next vacation.
And food, always food.
On a typical Friday night I am
Netflix and takeout, or getting your party on — how do you let loose?
With a few friends playing board games or having a couple drinks at a pub somewhere.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
I’m an empty essay… fill me out!
I have a love for colourful and/or patterned socks
You should message me if
Offer a few tips to help matches win you over.
You want to help me with my Dutch grammar/writing (seriously!)
You want to play Scrabble, or Catan, or Cards Against Humanity, or Carcassone or... Ok I think you get the point.
You want to tell me what your favourite animal is and why! I do study that sort of stuff for a living. :)

Or, most importantly, if you want to!
