My Self-Summary

I'm an English guy who came to the States on a strict six month contract - twelve years ago. While becoming used to the fact that I'm here for the duration, I became a volunteer firefighter, motorcyclist, diver and amateur carpenter - my Dad & I have built many of the pieces of furniture in my house. The firefighter thing sounds much more than it is - in my town, we have three to five fires a year (thankfully), so the chance of having to actually be a Boston or NY style hero is slim to none. I work as an IT manager (heroics not necessary) for one of the big accounting firms so I'm a computer geek. In spite of that (or is it because if it?), I cook rather well - I'm no creative chef, but if you can find a recipe for what you crave, I can cook it.

What I’m doing with my life

Project management in IT pays the bills. Fire stuff and Kiva provide the feeling of doing some good in the world. Motorcycles, cooking and scuba provide fun.

I’m really good at

Barbecue, computer geek stuff, making things, making people laugh.

The first things people usually notice about me

I'd guess it's the English accent, but as so many folks here have remarked, you tell me.

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

Books: Too many to choose from - mostly sf/fantasy. Snow Crash, Cryptonomicon & The Diamond age are particular favourites at the moment.

Movies: Highlander, Top Gun, The Godfather, Full metal jacket, The Quiet man, Gladiator, Aliens

Music: My iPod tells me it is currently Stevie Ray Vaughan's The house is a rockin:, folllowed by Desparado. Also Opera, classical & a host of other stuff. Really, as long as it's not Rap, I like it & I assume that one day, I'll find a Rap artist or at least track that I like.

Food: Steak, Indian, Thai, sushi.

The six things I could never do without

A motorcycle, red wine & someone to drink it with, my music collection, books, a computer, my wood working tools.

I spend a lot of time thinking about

How Joe Public keeps his computer(s) running - mine are problematic all the time and I do that stuff as my job. Is Geek Squad making out like a bandit?

Also, recently, whether I should sign up for flying lessons. When I first came to the States, I was torn between flying & scuba but didn't have time for both. Now, ~400 dives in, I think there could be some time for light aircraft.

On a typical Friday night I am

Cooking something well worth eating, or realizing that, since I'm late home from the office yet again, that my friends at the sushi delivery place will earn their money bringing me sweet sweet dinner.
