My self-summary
Everything I'd likely write here ought to be discernable from the rest of my profile. So, if you find me fetching, have a look.
What I’m doing with my life
I've recently moved back to Philadelphia from a land of suburban sprawl and Southern drawl; all things considered, Philly feels more like home. So, I am reestablishing myself, getting out there and broadening my social scene, reconnecting with old friends, working and looking for more work, updating my OkC profile, and settling in. It's a transition period, and I'm having a great time.

Longer term, I am a student of history in an official sense, which will lead to a teaching career, but I am a learner and experiential liver through and through. I write, and hopefully people will still be spending money on books by the time I'm old, misanthropic, and connected enough to publish any.
I’m really good at
figuring out how to cook inauthentic "ethnic" food through trial and error, finding eclectic and neglected music on youtube, the Socratic Method, playing guitar, the forgotten skills of reading and listening comprehension, painting (pictures not walls), straddling the fence between hipster and casually formal, middle class white dude in my outward appearance, playing baseball, and remaining vigilant.
The first things people usually notice about me
I usually get the - "you look like [some famous, thin, anti-establishment guy] but I can't think of who."
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
Dostoevsky and Tolstoy, Rimbaud, William Blake, Herman Hesse but it's been a while, lots of history - the serious kind, not the blow um up, how big was the gun type - James Baldwin, Nietzsche is a blast, no matter what one thinks of his thought.

Movies: hard to pick favorites for any of these, but...
Dreams of Dust, The Red and the White, Distant, The Last Valley, Koyaanisqatsi, The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie, but I'm not always a pretentious foreign film snob. I had a soft spot for Superbad when it came out.

Daily Show and Colbert, C-SPAN can be good, but yeah, it's usually dry and depressing

Music: everything that's good that I can find; from Peter Tosh to Bill Monroe, Louis Moreau Gottschalk to Arkey Blue, Digital Underground, Frankie Lymon, Buffy St. Marie, Ravi Shankar, Blind Willie McTell, Malvina Reynolds, P-Funk, Woody Guthrie, Das Racist, Townes Van Zandt, Roberta Flack, Comedian Harmonists, Fela, Harry the Hipster...
The six things I could never do without
Music, Conversation and... Air, Water, Food and Shelter... in that order.
I spend a lot of time thinking about
When will Justin Bieber write the next great American novel? I will remain in existential crisis until he does so.
On a typical Friday night I am
sitting cross-legged in a bungalow contemplating the word "typical." That, or somewhere being 27.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
is that I am suspicious of everyone I speak to on here. Are they an identity thief, an agent of the NSA, are they going to take my guns? What is the eye on the pyramid on the back of the US dollar watching?
