My self-summary
Let's see, I'm a student and a research assistant at the University of Helsinki. I'm also involved in different teaching activities pretty often.

I'm studying for the sake of studying. That is, I think stuff like programming languages, math and theoretical computer science is awesome, and the feeling you get when you finally understand something difficult or solve a challenging problem is something incredible.

I also really like teaching in the university environment. When you explain something to someone and you can see that you just got him/her to grasp something it makes you feel pretty good.

I don't seem to be the most stereotypical student since I really dislike working alone. I'm the sort of person who thinks solving mathematical problems can be a fun social activity and most of my solo projects tend to start collecting dust rather fast (or whatever it is that happens to forgotten bits on a hard drive). This has had the unfortunate effect of me not bothering with any theses, but I'm working on it.

When I'm not studying or working I'm most likely spending time with my friends, quite often playing board games or video games with them.

Whe I'm alone, I spend time reading books and visual novels, playing video games and watching movies, TV series and documentaries. I like visiting the local film festivals (most notably Rakkautta & Anarkiaa, Espoo Ciné and Docpoint).

I have a tendency to get really focused on something and forget about everything else. For example, I've watched over 40 movies during a 10 day film festival. I'm not very good at following social mediums, as I kind of forget about them every now and then. Though a smart phone and a tablet have helped with this.
I’m really good at
Teaching, specifically teaching computer programming and math. I guess I'm also pretty good at studying.

I really like singing, but I have no idea if I'm any good at it. I'd also like to one day know how to play drums, but so far I haven't done anything towards that beyond playing Rock Band.
The first things people usually notice about me
My awesome red beard. The color of which you can't see because for some reason I uploaded a black & white photo. I guess I should find a good color photo.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
This was a wall of text. I'll try to keep it in check this time. Oh well, apparently I don't know how to write this shortly.

I like Patricia McKillips fantasy books, they have such a nice atmosphere. If there exists something similar, I would definitely be interested. I have enjoyed some of Haruki Murakami's books quite a lot, specifically Norvegian Wood and Dance, Dance, Dance. And reading China Miévilles The City and the City was a blast.

I also read graphic novels and I really liked Marjane Strapi's Persepolis. Yoshihiro Tatsumi's A Drifting Life was really good as well. I also liked Logicomix, probably partially because it featured the recent history of logic, but it definitely was a page turner. And for some longer serialized works I've really enjoyed I'll list Naoki Urasawa's Monster and Kiyohiko Azuma's Yotsuba.

I watch all sorts of movies, including documentaries and animated movies. Some of my favorites include Amélie, "The good, the Bad and the Ugly", Win Win, "Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter, ... and Spring" and Love Exposure.

I like most of the Studio Ghibli stuff, especially Spirited Away and Totoro. And I really like Mamoru Hosoda's recent movies, Summer Wars and The Girl who Leapt Through Time. And I loved The Illusionist.

I started watching more documentaries a few years ago after seeing The Cove at the Rakkautta & Anarkiaa film festival. It was probably the best film screening I've been to, with the director being there for questions and the audience standing up and applauding for something that felt like 15 minutes. Apart from The Cove, some of my recent favorites include Miesten Vuoro, Kumaré, Big Boys Gone Bananas!* and Anvil: The Story of Anvil.

My all time favorite TV-series has to be The Wire. After the third season I thought there couldn't be a better season in any series and then the fourth season managed to be even better. I have also liked Buffy, Usagi Drop, Friday Night Lights and Breaking Bad.

My favorite bands include Venetian Snares, Pariisin Kevät, Ulver, Sigur Rós, Apocalyptica, Stam1na, Porcupine Tree, Kate Bush, PMMP and some Mike Patton stuff (Fantômas and Tomahawk in particular)

My new favorite board game is Dominion. I also like Puerto Rico and Race for the Galaxy quite a lot.

For single player video games, some of my favorites are: Bastion, Alpha Protocol, Analogue: A Hate Story, Psychonauts, Portal, Cave Story, Fallout: New Vegas (though it's a bit too big for my taste. I still haven't finished it and it's currently on hold).

And the multiplayer video game I've been playing with my friends for some time now is Heroes of Newerth.

I like spicy food, sushi and almost anything with olives or feta.
The six things I could never do without
The only thing I really couldn't live without would be other people, or more specifically my friends. Though living without computers or not being able to study math or computer science would definitely be weird. And living without music wouldn't be fun.
On a typical Friday night I am
Doing something with my friends, like watching a movie, playing some games or just hanging around. If I'm not with my friends, then I'm probably reading a book or playing a video game.

Or if there's a party with singstars or other karaoke games involved I'll definitely be there.
