My self-summary
I'm originally from the wilds of Canada but moved to the Bay Area for grad school. Barring a small absence for work abroad (Berlin in Germany, and Toronto my home town) I have been here ever since. The California sunshine is hard to leave!

I enjoy my work a great deal but I am most definitely a balanced person and I try to spend my evenings and weekends doing other things. I have a great variety interests and I am always looking for people with whom to share these. I especially love connecting with my friends and family through conversation about whatever inspires us, preferably over a good meal.

In no particular order, I enjoy playing soccer (I've been "promoted" to organizer of my team), renting a house in Tahoe and skiing for a weekend, hiking nearby or up in the mountains (just discovered the joy of hiking poles), cooking with friends (I've been doing "swim dinner" once a week with my swimming partners), eating out, reading about politics and history, listening to jazz and world music, going to the museum. I am a big fan of film festivals (I'm looking forward to the San Jose FF and SFFF in a few months) and also of the theatre -- I love good storytelling! While I enjoy the natural Californian environment and try to get outdoors a lot, I must admit to being a city person at heart. I enjoy the vibrancy of San Francisco and thus I make fairly regular trips -- I love to discover a new neighbourhood with its shops and cafes and local character(s).

I aspire to be an honest, genuine, thoughtful, generous and supportive person. Some traits that I like about myself are: I am calm, (er, usually) rational and patient. I can be independent and resourceful. I can lead by building consensus. I have a booming voice when I need it. I am a good listener. I am polite. I'm very tolerant and can see things from different perspectives. I eat a lot of fruit. I have my Dad's sense of humour. I have a lot of energy and enthusiasm for the things I like to do.

I would like to meet a positive, intelligent, educated, sporty, attractive woman who will be my best friend, my lover, and my partner in all things. I'd like our connection to eventually develop into a serious and long-term relationship. The woman I'm hoping to meet will be someone with whom I can share my thoughts, interests and pleasures; someone I can learn from and be inspired by; someone with whom I will enjoy doing all the neat things we will do together.

Well, that's the big picture! In practice: I'd love to meet someone who'll cook with me, host a dinner party with me, play a sport with me. Someone who will appreciate the wonderful breakfasts I can make. Someone who'll want to mix up our circles of friends and see what happens. Someone who will go for a 10 mile walk with me. Someone who'll have lively, multi-faceted, sometimes deep, sometimes whimsical conversations with me into the wee hours...
What I’m doing with my life
I work as a university researcher, and I have recently done the unusual thing (for academics) of changing fields from pure maths into computer science. I'm now working in a research group where I can apply my knowledge while at the same time collaborating with really great people and learning fascinating new things. I am very happy and feel lucky to have found such a niche. My duties also involve some teaching, which I find very fulfilling and rewarding -- I teach summer math camp for gifted high school students if you can imagine!
I’m really good at
I'm a good organizer. I can teach well. I can cook well. Yes - good at math.
The first things people usually notice about me
Deep voice, blue eyes, strong legs, big head (Ok, I'm an academic, we're not called egg-heads for nothing...). I look young for my age.(Honestly!)
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
Top five plays I've ever seen: Arcadia, Major Barbara, The Witch is Not For Burning, Waiting for Godot, Copenhagen. My favourite movie in recent years has been The Lives of Others. I love Brubeck and Coltrane. I love a good paella, a good pizza, good pappardelle with pan-fried plaice ;)
The six things I could never do without
I've had to think about this in the context of a job offer from a far-flung place...
A great grocery store.
Walking to work (this one might be unsustainable...).
Swimming.
A cosmopolitan metropolis within driving distance.
An airport.
Friends!
I spend a lot of time thinking about
Activities in SF, current events, 20th century history, keeping up with my good friends who have moved away and my family in Toronto.
On a typical Friday night I am
At a dinner. At a movie. Out running. Never on the road to Tahoe if I can help it.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
Tough one... I believe that good relationships are precious and worth fighting for. In the past, this has led me to stay longer in relationships than perhaps I should have. But I have no regrets -- my past relationships were always with good people from whom I learned a lot; and I am optimistic that this character trait that I have just described will one day be extremely useful and valuable to me and to my partner!
