Such a grand request.
What I’m doing with my life
I'm a grad student at Michigan, plugging away at my work.
I’m really good at
I love to talk - to explore ideas with other people, to drop into playful argument and to stumble on to things together we hadn't expected.
I also like to play music. I grew up learning string instruments through school music programs, and I've picked up a few other instruments along the way since. My current project is learning how to play 30s swing guitar, and my roommates have a lot of possibly uncharitable things to tell you about how well that project is going.
The first things people usually notice about me
My glasses and hair. As a study abroad student in South Africa, I
was sitting on a street corner I often rested at in the afternoon
when a group of eight boys came up to me, extended a set of faded
collector's cards from the Harry Potter movies, and asked 'Is you
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
I like to read a lot of different things but I generally find myself reading history, philosophy and the occasional novel. I also do a lot of reading for my work in a dingy basement at the university, and I'm pretty good at giving a sense of why I find it interesting.
I love hearty American dishes - sweet potatoes, green beans, chicken stew, cooked carrots, and all sorts of soups. Simple food offers such pure pleasures. It's also pretty easy to cook.
I especially love listening to 20s music, swing jazz, and 60s-70s soul. That sounds so much more specific than I intend it to seem.
The six things I could never do without
Shade on a blistering hot day
A song to hum through the day
A long run or bike ride
I spend a lot of time thinking about
Books I'm reading, politics, making the world a better place (and then ridiculing the presumption), tunes I'm trying to remember, random historical tidbits, dance steps, my work, thrift and estate sale bargains.
On a typical Friday night I am
Often swing dancing (Lindy Hop, for those in the know)! I love the music, the venues, the people and the creativity, playfulness and humor of the dance.
On nights I don't go out dancing, I like to meet up with friends and see what happens, or go to a gallery, movie or show. However, I also appreciate a nice quiet night at home with a good cuppa and book.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
I have a weakness for the sound of old-fashioned Hollywood studio orchestras.
You should message me if
You have a generous but slyly subversive sense of humor.
