My self-summary
Write a little about yourself. Just a paragraph will do.
It is always difficult and self-serving to describe one's self.
I am a bundle of paradoxes and I know it. I'm an old fashioned dreamer, yet I always try to keep a practical eye on the future. I'm a wanderer who still loves to be rooted in a place and among a people. I have a reputation for quiet studiousness, and yet also for dramatic flare and passion. I love Christ and the Christian tradition, and yet I find my own faith so fantastical and absurd, challenging and wondrous, frustrating and fulfilling. After studying public history and working in the legal profession I have come east from my native Northern California to study religion and the complicated, ambiguous organization thereof. I am enjoying the East, but I love my home in the grand spaces of the West. Someday, perhaps I can show you my homeland of redwoods and mountains, and our shimmering City by the Bay. Wherever you may be from, I would love to get to know you and see your world, and to explore the paradoxes of your own.
What I’m doing with my life
Don’t overthink this one; tell us what you’re doing day-to-day.
I am in a graduate program studying for a Master of Divinity degree, so I spend most of my time reading, writing, and debating Christian theology, history, politics, and church structure. This is not quite as boring as you might think...unless you're trying to read Basil of Caesarea.

I am also doing my best to enjoy the Washington area, having been here only a year. I spend most weekends hiking in local parks, visiting museums and historic sites, or just strolling a historic neighborhood like Old Town Alexandria. And yes, I still gawk when I'm on the Mall just like any tourist fresh off the plane from Iowa. I love travel of any kind, be it day trips or foreign adventures. There are few places in the world I would not like to visit.
I’m really good at
Go on, brag a little (or a lot). We won’t judge.
Writing, singing, acting, driving long distances without getting bored, explaining complex biblical themes to a lay audience, boring people with historical minutiae, gazing out of windows with a far away look...
The first things people usually notice about me
I’m an empty essay… fill me out!
The cross pendant I usually wear, given to me many years ago by my father.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food

Books: Albion's Seed, The Refinement of America, just about anything written by NT Wright, just about everything by Jane Austen (I'm secure enough to admit that). Honestly ashamed I don't read more fiction. Perhaps you can suggest something.

Movies: A River Runs Through It, 500 Days of Summer, Babette's Feast, Gettysburg, John Adams, The Mission, Blackrobe, The Horse Whisperer, One Week, Gosford Park, The Shawshank Redemption, True Grit (old version and new version), Casablanca.

Shows: I don't watch television that much these days. Back in the day, I loved Frasier and The West Wing. The most recent series I followed was The Tudors. I do enjoy the Big Bang Theory and HIMYM once in a while. Yes, I love Downton Abbey when it comes around, and Masterpiece Theater generally.

Music: Classical, light rock, hymns, contemporary Christian, epic film scores, bluegrass. So glad Nickel Creek is back together.
The six things I could never do without
Think outside the box. Sometimes the little things can say a lot.
1. Church
2. Singing
3. Nature - undeveloped natural beauty
4. My car / long drives
5. NPR
6. Travel
I spend a lot of time thinking about
Global warming, lunch, or your next vacation… it’s all fair game.
History, religion, my faith, the future of the country and the cosmos, where I would like to travel to next.

How wherever I am at any given moment might have looked like in 1895.
On a typical Friday night I am
Netflix and takeout, or getting your party on — how do you let loose?
Kicking back with friends, watching a movie, or contradancing. I do love contradancing.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
I’m an empty essay… fill me out!
Sometimes I can't decide if I'm Mr. Darcy or Mr. Collins in all of this. But then, even Mr. Collins found Charlotte Lucas. So there's that.

Offer a few tips to help matches win you over.
You are interested in getting to know me, even if for friendship. For the best relationships always begin with friendship.

You don't mind a man with a few extra pounds. I've lost a lot of weight in the last two years, and I'm proud of how far I've come. I'm still moving in the right direction, and perhaps we can help each other to be healthy and whole. But you should know that I still have work to do.

Do feel free to initiate contact, I don't mind. And pay a visit. I may visit your profile, but I won't usually message you until I know you've had at least enough interest to visit my profile.
