My self-summary
Write a little about yourself. Just a paragraph will do.
For years I've said that I am a Californian expat living in Maryland, but I just tried to move back to California this summer, and it didn't really work for me, so I'm coming back. I don't know what that means about what I call myself.

I make a living writing and teaching writing.

I use 'dude' as a gender-neutral term, but I'm open to change if I run into someone it offends. (I have yet to, as far as I know.)
What I’m doing with my life
Don’t overthink this one; tell us what you’re doing day-to-day.
Working on a curriculum vitae that reads like one of those dotted-line Family Circus comics. I used to work for an LGBT nonprofit. Before that, I worked for a monster. Most recently, I just wrapped up teaching creative writing at UCSC, and that was a pretty rad experience. Some other stuff -- you're not here to hear my whole CV.

Things that I don't know how to do, but I'd like to learn in the coming year or so:

Reading music
I’m really good at
Go on, brag a little (or a lot). We won’t judge.
I think I am good at avoiding or containing knee-jerk reactions to new or challenging ideas until I can give them an appropriate amount of reflection.

I'm also pretty proud of the writing I do; I have a few stories and poems published, and I'm hoping that my book-length manuscript gets picked up soon. (But then, aren't we all?)

Books: I think that this category is where readers are supposed to demonstrate that we have a sense of an up-to-date, Western cannon (A Room of One's Own, The Handmaid's Tale), but also where we show that we didn't stop reading after college by talking about contemporary literature (Prelude to Bruise by Saeed Jones, The Empathy Exams by Leslie Jamison). If we're trying to be biblio-hipsters, maybe we mentions works of an acquired taste (About a Mountain by John D'Agata; The Captain Asks for a Show of Hands by Nick Flynn; Woman, Native, Other by Trinh Mihn-ha).

Music: I can't really say any more. I grew up on skate- and polisci- punk, but nowadays my taste is pretty broad. Lately I've been on a Roots/Folk/Alt-Country kick. Before that, it was Doo Wop.

TV: I want to tell you that I don't watch television, but that would be a lie. I watch Doctor Who, Orange is the New Black and Orphan Black. Related: I think that it is okay to have problematic favorites, but one has a responsibility to be critical when it is due.
I spend a lot of time thinking about
Global warming, lunch, or your next vacation… it’s all fair game.
Narrative identity
Status anxiety
Social justice
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
I’m an empty essay… fill me out!
I'm really into NPR.

You want to chat, flirt or connect.

I am Queer (I date and flirt with people of all genders), and I am in a long-term, polyamorous relationship; it would make the most sense if you were comfortable with those traits before messaging me.

Don't message me if you're sexist, racist, homophobic, transphobic or generally an unwelcoming person.
