I am idealistic, kind, and a cosmic hiccup.

My Self-Summary

This really needs a lot of updating, so sorry for inconsistencies.

I believe disposable income is best spent on traveling; that most people are inherently good and well intentioned; that the best people to be around tend to be the least predictable. I know that everyone has a story worth hearing; that the world doesn't exist in neat dichotomies, but in relative degrees. I know how it feels like to let forever be.

I am NOT a planner, spontaneity tends to yield more fun for me. I don't really like watching sports and never have. I'm not aggressive. It's extremely rare that I get nervous or angry about anything. I have a mocking sense of humor and see absurdity everywhere. I'm optimistic and really looking forward to the future. I'm good at keeping secrets when asked to, and people seem to be very willing to tell them to me. Or maybe everyone gets that, either way this is not me volunteering to be your psychologist or life adviser!

I love sailing and fishing (which I don't get to do nearly enough of) along with just being out doors as often as I can. I think I actually enjoy the outdoors most at night time, the stars are so much better for staring at than the sun. To me a full moon usually means it's a great night to be outdoors. Related pics are in my journal.

I'd much rather have one superb drink than three shitty ones. As one might assume, with half my family being Belgian I have been raised with a healthy appreciation for all the fancy pants beers that come with corks instead of caps. I'm pretty bad at making home brews but my liquor infusions have had some great results.

What I’m doing with my life

Dragging my sacred Chinese turtle tail through the mud of course.

I'm taking a few classes and am a research assistant working on a sweet potato genetics grant (fun fun!). Also just moved into a house, first year out of apartments is pretty awesome so far. Next year I'm off to UNC for my MPH. After that I'm into my goal of epidemiology.

I also just bought a banjo and ukulele, so I guess I'm learning to play those! Can not wait for them to arrive.

I’m really good at

Getting sun burns, staying up all night, losing sun glasses, always getting picked for "random" TSA/customs searches. I'm a real catch!

The first things people usually notice about me

Being tall with long blond hair makes me easy to recognize. Also my eyes are slightly different colors. I only have one dimple. I also have the hands of a much taller person, you can kinda see this in some of my pictures.

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

Books: the serpent and the rainbow, heart of darkness, mountains beyond mountains, the soul of a new machine, zhuangzi, American gods, meno, the presentation of self in everyday life (hell, about everything Goffman wrote). I have an odd fascination with books about culture and religion, factual or fiction. Recently I've developed a soft spot for Rumi and Han-shan's poems.

Music: Early reggae is my favorite. After that comes classic rock, electronica, classical, and some grunge-ish type stuff. Most played groups right now are probably Toots and the Maytals, Royksopp, Desmond Dekker, Cream, Chemical Brothers, Pink Floyd, Paco De Lucia, Animal Collective, Massive Attack and the Amps. I currently can't get the chorus of metric's "sick muse" out of my head.

Movies:I tend to go for the dramas, preferably ones that give a good social commentary. A Beautiful Mind, The Wrestler, Girl Interrupted, American History X, Lost in Translation, Amadeus and Adaptation are just a few of my favorites.

Food: My favorite food is a new one, or a spicy one. This time of year I'm on a pumpkin obsession, going after anything featuring it. Pumpkin beer, pie, soups, cake, seeds, casseroles... and I've been told that pumpkin frozen yogurt sundaes exist which I am excited to try.

TV: Some favorites have been Arrested Development, The Sopranos, Battlestar Galactica, House, The Office, Futurama, Dexter, Venture Brothers ... And I feel almost guilty for admitting to following Heroes because it's so cheesy. Some friends are also in the process of educating me about True Blood.

The six things I could never do without

- trip planned to look forward to
- a friend or date to go on said trip with
- something to write, type or chisel my thoughts into
- red pepper
- tooth paste
- a passport

I spend a lot of time thinking about

Biology's interplay with the social sciences.
Metaphors for the things people do.
How people reconcile contradictions.
How most of our mass of was formed in the core of an exploding star, so we're technically all made of star dust. Or nuclear waste if you prefer.
The general occupational stuff everyone thinks about. Mine is kind of an internal debate on schooling after the MPH.

On a typical Friday night I am

Lately out to listen to music, drinking and hanging with friends, seeing a play/movie, eating bugs, bowling, catfishing, wishing all my friends didn't have swine flu, working on this horribly long research project... if you happen to be an expert on noncompliance behaviors and the practice of medicine in developing nations please help me free up my weekends!

The most private thing I’m willing to admit here

I sing in the car, as long as there is no one there to hear me. My most successful relationships all occurred when the woman made the first move. I was on a plane that came very close to crashing once, microburst on landing attempt. I think I look better with a beard but I usually keep it shaved off since most of my advice from female friends says beards are icky. If you have input on the facial hair I'd be glad to hear it.

I don't hardly have any deep secrets. I'll pretty much answer whatever people ask. I'm really comfortable with who I am and don't hide it.

You should message me if

If your space ship knows which way to go.

If you aren't afraid of traveling "off the beaten path" (as much as i hate to use that dumb phrase). I once made the mistake of taking someone who was afraid of flying on a low altitude Haitian flight and that ended in blood shed. I have the finger nail shaped puncture wound scars on my hand to prove it.

I don't start many of my conversations on here. I know women get swarmed on this site and I am usually content to let them make first contact.
