My self-summary
I moved to the bay area in 2008 after college mostly because I'd never been there and I was offered a job in SF. Growing up in Northern Virginia, California was talked about as a place full of strange folk. I figured I'd see what that was all about. It certainly hasn't disappointed and I've stayed for good.

I'll try to distill myself down into a few key points.

• I'm a lifelong student, as there is always something interesting to learn. I've often lost track of time browsing wikipedia, following a careening path through history. I never understood people who 'get bored'. I finally cut myself off from learning new instruments when I realized there aren't enough hours in the day to practice them all.

• I'm trying to be better about living in the moment and actually experiencing life. I tend to worry a lot about the future, but I don't want to die realizing I haven't lived.

• There is no reason to be mean or unpleasant, ever. After growing up in the pseudo south, going to college in the Northeast was a culture shock. I didn't realize you had to be introduced before you could strike up a conversation there.

• I much prefer experiences to things. Experiences get richer with each remembering.

• I tend to like people that are deeply passionate about something. It isn't important what, as long as the fire is there.
What I’m doing with my life
I just moved back to SF after two years living in Napa studying the wines there. I was just hired as the GM/Wine Director of an Italian restaurant. I work a lot as I also have my own business as a wine buyer for private collectors.
I’m really good at
Music has been my lifelong passion. I played classical piano competitively throughout high school and still play. I also play Flamenco guitar and used to play for dancers when I lived in SF before.

The wine/restaurant world is my professional area of expertise. I find the study of wine to be such an interesting topic that I've dedicated my life to the study of it. It doesn't hurt that 'studying' wine involves drinking lots of it and traveling around the world.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
I'm studying for my next somm test, so right now I'm reading tons of books about wine. I'm big into classic lit, some of my favorite classics are Moby Dick, The Great Gatsby, Light in August, A Hero of Our Time, A Separate Peace, Siddhartha, The Count of Monte Cristo, The Picture of Dorian Gray, and The Inferno. I'm also fascinated by books about future dystopian scenarios like 1984, Brave New World, The Trial, and Fahrenheit 451. I just read 'Freedom' by Jonathan Franzen and loved it.

I'm also hooked on books about sustainability, Michael Pollan, Bill McKibben, Carlo Petrini, Eric Schlosser, etc.

I have a passion for poetry, which seems to be rare these days sadly. I love Dickinson, Yeats, Billy Collins, Frost, Whitman, T.S. Eliot and many more.

For music, I listen to everything from classical to bluegrass to classic rock. The only three genres I'm not so into are country, punk, and rap.

Food-wise, I worked as a line cook during college and I still love cooking today. I'm not picky, I like anything interesting as long as everything is fresh. I would have no problem subsisting on Thai food and sushi if it came down to it.

I'm not into TV, I don't own one. I can think of better things to do than sitting perfectly immobile for extended periods. That said, I love movies but it's hard these days to make time for a two-hour film when I've got so much else on my plate.
