I am dry-witted, loyal, and articulate.
My Self-Summary
Hello to you, intrepid sculler of profiles interminable. I was once
told I have the second most annoying voice in the world. I hope you
will not be similarly vexed by my written tirades
My name is Scott. I study software engineering at Heriot Watt
university and have lived all my life in Falkirk (central
Scotland).
You will have noticed I do 'nt type lk dis'. This is just raw
personal preference, fractured English annoys me. Communication is
a wondeful thing and people that put more effort into it instantly
earn my respect
What sort of person am I?
Life is short. Everyone knows it but so many of us willfully
fritter it away. For a year I worked in a local cafe. Every Sunday
morning a woman came in with her husband and ordered toast. Every
week I took her the toast and she had an expression of utmost
boredom and thanked me in a voice completely devoid of life.
I never want to end up like that. Life is a great gift and its
opportunities should be taken.
An acquaintance of mine once said of a girl "I've never met anyone
that stupid, she's lucky she's hot"
I thought "Not really, it means people like you will treat her in
that way"
Another friend showed me a picture of an attractive woman and
rather crudely asked "wud ye?"
I said "I don't know - I don't know anything about her"
He didn't understand that answer. Perhaps my views are hopelessly
out of touch but that is the way I view the world
I believe very strongly in people's ability to change their lives
via the right attitude. That's not to say I buy into new-age
'cosmic ordering' or the like, I just firmly believe that people
with more optimistic attitudes do better in challenging situations
than pessimists
I'm an honest person. When I was entering my teens I was blunt and
thought myself clever for it. Now I employ tact when appropriate
but I still absolutely will not lie (or omit, or misrepresent) even
when that makes my life more difficult than it otherwise would
be
All sorts of things fascinate me. Psychology is an area that I find
very interesting but perhaps only because I'm a layman. Some of the
studies that have been done into human behaviour are
incredible
I follow cricket, golf and football; mainly as an armchair fan but
I enjoy going to matches too
I have a sense of humour which I like to think of as unusual and
others have variously described as warped, non-existant and
illegal
To me a significant other is someone you can be yourself around,
someone that accepts you completely. They don't need to share all
your interests or have all the same views as you but they embrace
you wholeheartedly despite any differences. Someone that you would
die for and someone that you want to live for. Someone that makes
simple things like walking home on a dark winter's night a fun
experience
What I’m doing with my life
I'm four and a bit years into a degree in Software Engineering.
Next summer I will finish that and hopefully before then I'll
figure out if I want to study for a phd or venture into the
workplace.
Currently I'm in the process of learning to play
golf
Another pet project of mine which I have been doing on and off for
a few years is learning to have
lucid dreams
In my younger years I did a lot of writing for fun. That has
slipped away from me over time but I would really like to go back
to it at some stage
Other than that I'm always looking to learn new things, see new
places and meet interesting people
I’m really good at
Most things academic, especially maths and science. I'm often
called a bright spark but really I have just been fortunate enough
to have a good memory.
I seem to have a knack for noticing things and putting connections
together that my friends and family don't.
The first things people usually notice about me
Probably that I haven't said much. I'm pretty quiet around people
at first but I'll talk you to death once I've got warmed up
My favorite books, movies, music, and food
I haven't read as much recently as I'd like. Some of my favourite
authors are
Tolkien,
Pratchett,
Crichton and
Cormier but really I'll read anything.
Generally I read sci-fi/fantasy
Movies - Hard to pick out just a few but some that I like include
Gladiator, The Shawshank Redemption, Borat, Crash and the Butterfly
Effect
TV - In years gone by I've watched a lot of sci-fi, recently my
favourite show has been
House but I also like
Heroes,
Battlestar Galactica,
Supernatural,
The West
Wing and
Doctor
Who
Music - I was a real latecomer to music and I'm still finding out
exactly what my tastes are. I do enjoy
Johnny Cash,
Michelle Branch,
Paul Potts,
Hanna Pakarinen and
Oasis. I recently
discovered the Trans-Siberian Orchestra and I was blown away.
Food - I really enjoy food of all kinds, I go out of my way to try
new things whenever I can. My particular favourites are mexican
food and wild game
The six things I could never do without
The internet. It's just such a powerful tool for communicating,
shopping, banking, researching and entertainment that my life would
definitely be less convenient without it
Something to occupy my mind. I get extremely restless if I've got
nothing to work on for long periods of time. Learning new things is
something I really enjoy whether it's useless trivia, hard science,
history or pop culture
Friends and family. I think Bill Clinton said it best - "If we were
the most beautiful, the most intelligent, the most wealthy, the
most powerful person - and then found all of a sudden that we were
alone on the planet, it wouldn't amount to a hill of beans"
Humour. What would life be worth if we could not laugh at ourselves
and with our friends?
Imagination. As Einstein said, 'Logic will get you from A to B,
imagination will take you everywhere.' I love sci-fi/fantasy
TV/films/books, anything that gets you away from the mundane and
lets you think about issues in isolation
I spend a lot of time thinking about
Can there ever be peace in the middle east?
Why is everyone that drives behind me always in such a rush?
Why is everyone that drives in front of me always so slow?
What do people hope to achieve by raging at the poor people on
check-in desks or the like?
In all seriousness I think about more or less everything - God,
religion, politics, sport, who would win in a duel between Gandalf
and Dumbledore. Some things I don't like to dwell on are whatever
celebrity X is in the news for or who is the subject of the latest
media witch hunt
On a typical Friday night I am
Most likely at home, relaxing. Or possibly at the cinema or
visiting a friend. If I can get a team together I love to enter
quizzes
I'm not a great fan of crowded, noisy spaces full of drunken people
trying to impress each other but occasionally I will be found in
the pub.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit here
I worry that I will always be alone
You should message me if
You are not looking for an average guy. You're not interested in
the sort of person that happily boasts 'Last night I drank X units
of alcohol, slept with Y women and that's only the half I
remember.' You enjoy chatting about moral and philosopical
conundrums and light hearted trivia equally
I'm happy to chat and get to know new people, even if that's as far
it goes
