I am intelligent, self sufficient, and curious.

My Self-Summary

This is the part that has been written and rewritten at least a dozen times. At this point, it is simply a testament to my inability to "sell" myself and my obsessive compulsive disorder. I think I'll see if the rest of this sin against grammar can convey the intended message.

What I’m doing with my life

I'm a shop supervisor for the equipment cage at a local art school. It's stressful to deal with all of the bureaucracy but I suppose that it's worth it if I can make the place a little better. When I'm not at the day job, I supplement my living as a theatre technician, mostly dealing with audio, video, and lighting, which can keep me sane after dealing with a lot of paperwork. Also, while it's mostly been a private part of my life, I am a musician, and I try to write and play as much as possible. I may make the leap to professional in the near future, I just need to push myself.

Oh...right, I also have a bachelor's degree in animation, so I get some freelance doing motion graphics and video from time to time. I like to keep busy.

I’m really good at

I play the guitar, and I like to think that I do it well. I can sing, which is something I think I learned from my mother through osmosis. Writing comes very easily, but I still find that I have grammar issues every once in a while. I'm learning, but I can fix small electronics and build odd little devices. Honestly, I'm the sort of person who thinks that they can do better at anything they do well.

The first things people usually notice about me

These days, I look like heavy metal Jesus.

Beyond the physical: I have a dark (we're talking black) sense of humour with a quiet, dry demeanour.

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

I am in love with words. My reading habits may be sporadic due to my work schedule, but when I find something that I like, it's hard for me to tear away. Mostly, I enjoy fiction (Michael Chabon, John Irving, Christopher Moore, Herman Hesse), sometimes with a genre bent (Michael Moorcock, Neil Gaiman, Frank Herbert). I also have a sporadic passion for comic books. I stick mostly to the Vertigo stuff, but I am not the sort to write off a good superhero book.

I have what technically amounts to a film degree, so I am a touch picky with my cinema habits. Still, I love the films of the Coen brothers, Ridley Scott (circa 79-90), Henry Selick, Akira Kurosawa, Guillermo Del Toro, and so on.

I am far too interested in music to choose any favourites with any kind of authority. The first bit of music that really engaged me on a meaningful level has to be Nine Inch Nails, which was something of a gateway drug. These days I bounce around a lot, so some current interests are Cult of Luna, ISIS, Tom Waits, Neko Case, Feist, Jack Rose, Alice Coltrane, Peter Gabriel, Mastodon, Decapitated, Godflesh, Alice in Chains, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Explosions in the Sky, Murder by Death, Low, Kate Bush, Tori Amos, Pink Floyd, TOOL, Black Sabbath, and I could really just fill countless pages with this, but you get the idea.

When I'm not living off of organic peanut butter and jelly, I cook whatever I am capable of (this is rapidly expanding), which most often includes chicken, rice and beans. When I go out, I love Chinese, Indian, and Mexican foods. Also, I will never, ever say no to a good piece of red meat.

The six things I could never do without

-my sight
-my hearing
-my hands
-my guitar
-something to play recorded music
-someplace to get away

I spend a lot of time thinking about

Music. I am constantly playing something in my head, whether it be something I've heard or have written. I also tend to diagram each room that I enter. I haven't figured out if it's pragmatism or paranoia.

Currently, I'm ruminating on how this site has really done nothing but made me successfully creepy.

On a typical Friday night I am

I'm back to only working a day job for now, so now I have Fridays free to go see a movie, see a show, or give in to the alarming lack of sleep that defines my life at times. Maybe I'll finally have a social life...maybe...probably not, but you get the idea.

The most private thing I’m willing to admit here

I am a laconic, 195 pound, Irish-American male, but I'll be damned if I didn't cry when my cat died. Let's see how long it takes me to regret putting that one up there.

You should message me if

I am looking for a companion; someone who will challenge me in some way. If you have a passion for something that's not a professional sport (unless you count martial arts, in which case I'm right there with you) there's a good chance I'd like to at least talk to you.
