Hi, I'm Austin!

I am and will always be a nerd at heart. Fortunately, I'm getting into a career that allows me to perpetually indulge my obsession with all things scientific (see section below). I don't have a whole lot of free time as a medical student, but I like to think I'm a laid-back guy on those rare occasions when I'm not cramming information into my brain as fast as I can.

I'm an optimist, a thinking man, and a generous soul. I'm also honest and reliable to a fault: if I make a promise, I keep it. No exceptions. I'm generally earnest and straightforward, but I can be a cynical smartass when it's called for (or every once in a while when it's just really funny).

In my second year of medical school, and just started my clinical rotations. I'm not completely sure what branch of medicine I want to get into yet, and I may very well change my mind once I get more exposure, but right now I really like the idea of a surgery specialty.

Whatever I end up choosing, I know that I want to get into academic medicine. Call me greedy, but I can't be satisfied with just taking care of one person at a time... I want to help change the way medicine is practiced.

Books: The Pillars of the Earth, World Without End, The Kite Runner, What is the What, The Universe in a Nutshell, A Brief History of Time, the Song of Ice and Fire series, and the Wheel of Time series.

Movies: There's hundreds, but here's a few off the top of my head - Primer, Serenity (along with Firefly, of course), Gladiator, The Lord of the Rings, The Godfather 1 and 2.

Music: Some of my favorite bands are Muse, Bang Camaro, Velvet Revolver, Daft Punk, Justice, and Aerosmith, but I'll listen to just about anything. I'm addicted to Pandora - if I have a song stuck in my head, I'll just plug it into Pandora and let it play an endless list of songs from the same genre.

Good food, especially good tex-mex.

The internet - I'm one of those people who's always looking something up.

Exercise. Especially if my job entails sitting around all day (as it does now).

Good books - I read all the time, probably more than is good for me, and I need a steady supply of good reads to keep me satisfied.

I have a pretty large collection of meteorites, and I find them freaking awesome on multiple levels.
