My Self-Summary
I'm a knowledge junkie. All those little bits about the world as it is are fascinating to me. Did you know that pinball is only legal in major cities because of how well one Roger Sharpe played the game in front of the New York City Council at a meeting to discuss it's status as a game of chance, in 1976? Or that marine biologists were short-sighted enough in naming a "giant squid" to have had to up their verbular ante to "colossal squid" for a new species that exhibits abyssal giantism? The world is a fascinating place, and I can't get enough of it.
I have a serious lust for travel. This is probably something to do with the above. On my list (for once there's some extra money around, whenever that the hell happens!) is: Ireland, the Greek Islands (especially Milos), those churches built on the top of vertically-walled mountains in greece, London (for Stonehenge), Yellowstone....and the list of wants can go on and on!
I'm most happy around people who can challenge others, socially and intellectually. Not as confrontation, but as a way to keep ourselves entertained!
My family gets a good portion of my time (older family, no kids yet). I'm constantly fixing something, moving something, or helping.
I live by my own standards, and think that everyone should. The irony in this has not entirely permeated my brain.
What I’m doing with my life
Looking for a decent job - I'm not required to work a regular job, financially, but I find myself really wanting to. And the extra money would be nice. Can you say.....flatscreen?
I take care of my 80+ grandmother, the woman's a spitfire and I love her dearly. It's a living arrangement that we both enjoy. It may change as circumstances do, but don't expect to change my mind about it before then.
Pulling punches while talking to people is something I do only to avoid hurting others uneccessarily. I don't have many subjects that are taboo.
I’m really good at
The first things people usually notice about me
I asked some friends, and they said the next most noticed things about me are that I laugh a lot, and I sometimes talk like a dictionary.
My favorite books, movies, music, and food
Mark Twain is my idol. His books have been my favorites all my life. Other than that, I have a WAY too healthy appetite for books. I've recently been reading A. Lee Martinez, whose short, funny books are a great distraction. Steven Brust, who writes mainly fantasy books (which are also good), writes a few that are absolutely grounded - those are wonderful. Brokedown Palace, a story he wrote that's heavily styled after a hungarian folk tale and a very strong allegory for moving forward with your life. Aaaanyways, I love books. Modern literature, science, fiction, classics....the book is one of the best inventions ever.
Fight Club is probably STILL my favorite movie, but there's definitely a place on the list for Stranger than Fiction, Serenity, Superbad, and anything coming out of Apatow and Aronofsky (exception of Reqiuem for a Dream. That movie was like a cinematic punch in the unmentionables.)
No foods. I kinda just eat to live, ya know ? Hmm...a little less vague would probably be good. I'm a big carnivore - my dinners have been known to actively infuriate vegans. (which isn't that big a worry because they're weak from lack of protein!) Anything prepared really well can be good, though. There's a great mac-n-chicken at Rock Bottom Brewery (go if you haven't been!), I have a favorite Italian place (it's in SF), and steaks are always a winner.
The six things I could never do without
Family
Adventure! (Big or small!)
Books
The internet (for info downloading!)
Animals!
I spend a lot of time thinking about
On a typical Friday night I am
Going out with friends (movies/shows/events)
Staying in with friends (games, movies again, just hanging out)
Reading/Tv (Tivo, I love you. Don't make me choose between you and the bookshelf.)
Date Night (when I've met someone I'm interested in - which is not so much the now)
The most private thing I’m willing to admit here
I think I'll just use something that is pretty apparent in person, but people online don't always know: I have *no* game. Whatever the gene is that allows people to put on their fake dating face, I don't have it. This generally allows my foot to become friends with my mouth at least once on a first date, but pays off later when we get to skip that period of "renegotioation" people hit when they start to ACTUALLY get to know each other. And I'm told it gives me a real knack for compliments, because they mean more when they're actually true.
