I appreciate small absurdities in mundane contexts, like when subway conductors go rogue. Favorite: "Ladies and gentlemen, this train is now going express. All of you wearing headphones are f**ked."
NYC's my home but I occasionally give away my midwestern past by smiling excessively, or striking up conversations with the checkout lady.
What I’m doing with my life
I'm a freelance costume designer for theatre, opera and dance. The hours are intense, but I love what I do, which is essentially the business of using peoples' clothes as a medium for telling stories.
I’m really good at
Most of the things that I've put my mind to so far, except for a job I had as a security guard once, which ended badly (see photo and height).
The first things people usually notice about me
I have curly reddish hair with a mind of it's own.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
Many. Currently juggling some Sarah Vowell, Etgar Keret and a biography of the 19th c. anchor-tattoo-sporting badass, the Empress Elizabeth of Austria.
I have listened to all of This American Life ever.
Radiolab, 99% Invisible, Mystery Show, Reply All, Love + Radio, Memory Palace
Black Mirror, The Wire, American Horror Story, Mad Men and the 1970's Muppet Show.
semi-obscure 1960s-1980s, David Bowie and friends, Bacharach pop songs and Heads (Talking Heads, Portishead, Radiohead, Hedwig and the Angry Inch...)
I love watching old music videos. The hilarious, the weird and the beautiful.
The six things I could never do without
used book stores
three friends i've known since preschool
30-minute pasta dishes
my awesome little brother
I spend a lot of time thinking about
What makes people tick.
On a typical Friday night I am
My work doesn't have a regular schedule, so on a Friday night I might be working on designs, watching a rehearsal, at a bar with friends, out at shows, or in with a good book. Lucky for me, they're all pretty fun.
You should message me if
you value empathy.
you have something interesting to say.
you have your own interests, goals and ambitions. I am often busy with mine, but I like learning about new worlds through the eyes of someone who is passionate about them.
