My self-summary
How much does it take to describe a person? I know some people who could be summed up in one word, and others who I can't even begin to explain. I don't even know where I'd put myself on that continuum.

I'm a graduate of the University of Texas, a BA with majors in History and Government. I was a Plan II Honors major, but did not complete a thesis.

I read historical fiction, romances, science fiction and fantasy, along with lots of other things. My primary musical taste is for folk music, country and filk (parody songs). My politics are decidedly not aligned with any specific agenda that I'm aware of.

I am currently in a long term happy and poly relationship, and interested in meeting new people. Questions about that might be answered by looking at the various status settings OKCupid puts on this page, or by asking me directly.

I am friendly, geeky, and literate

What I’m doing with my life
I work for the world's largest fruit company in technical services. I realize a lot of people hate this kind of job, but I'm having a decently fun time.

I'm still developing as a fencing referee. I have become fairly well established at the national lever, and need to season for a couple years before I'm ready to test for my international license.
I secretly hope US cities don't win the Olympics bids right now because I won't be Olympic level soon enough, but may get there in a few decades.

I’m really good at
Doing my job; I've been there two years and pretty much have this whole thing figured out. I'm moving in to a new role in a different group, but I'm confident I'll dominate that as well as I've done my last 3 roles.

I love to fly, and am working on raising my status on American Airlines. Right now I'm Platinum, but that's going to drop down to Gold because I didn't get as many trips this year as last. The travel game is still a lot of fun for me.

Other stuff:
Reading, being a fencing referee, thinking about political matters, organizing things, working with people, recalling details, working with computers.

The first things people usually notice about me
The beard is gone, so I really haven't the slightest clue since I don't have breasts.

I noticed his books first, since he tossed me one at practice that I still reread occasionally. This man has great taste in books :)

The six things I could never do without
Oh wait, they probably mean things that make you distinct from others.
In that case, we'd better rewrite it as "Six things I really like having", and then it becomes:
Jazz007, Books, my fannish and fencing friends, Civilization 4, Macs, and American Airlines miles.

I spend a lot of time thinking about
How the rest of my life will go. My friends. Conversations on Ars Technica and Fencing.net. How to be a better fencing referee. That's taken up a substantial portion of my life now. I like that I have the potential to help in the selection of Olympic and World Championship teams. Now I'm starting to get involved in the National level organization, and that takes a lot of attention. fencing

On a typical Friday night I am
Traveling to a fencing tournament, going out with my girlfriend and other friends, hanging out online, or spending time at a coffeeshop. Typical is a tough thing to decide.

The most private thing I’m willing to admit
I used to tell myself stories for hours in my backyard. Giant complicated plots with historical or nearly that settings and myself as the hero.
