My self-summary
Trying to enjoy a virtuous life and do the next right thing. Having fun doing it. And not afraid to start a sentence with a conjunction.
What I’m doing with my life
I work for a professional society doing educational measurement, statistics and computer programming, and I'm a pretty serious amateur photographer. That's a self-portrait up above, although portraiture is not the main focus of my photographic interest. I have a daughter who lives with her mother downstate. I speak to her almost every day and we spend time together when we can. I go out and listen to music quite a lot--mostly jazz and world music. Roots music, too. Some rock, of course. And I take in other arts--dance, theater, etc.
I’m really good at
Some people think I'm a good photographer, but I think I'm still working on getting there. I like to think that I'm a good listener and conversationalist, but you'll have to judge that one for yourself. I am a good problem solver and planner. I'm told that I'm a really good cook. (I've had more than one friend who, first thing when visiting me, looks in my refrigerator to see what good stuff might be there.) I'm really good at my work. I'm also really good at writing long sentences for online dating sites.
The first things people usually notice about me
1. I'm smart
2. I'm funny
3. Can't think of #3 right now. Maybe a little later
4. 1 & 2 probably aren't really the first things, are they? Oh well, back to square 1.
5.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
Culture and the visual and performing arts are important to me. I love jazz (mostly old bebop, hard bop, free bop, and avant garde jazz) and roots music (old acoustic blues, folk, and bluegrass). I also love world music, especially Indian classical music--Ali Akbar Khan, Ravi Shankar (peace be upon him), Amjad Ali Khan, HP Chaurasia, etc--and dance and middle eastern classical music. I should fess up and acknowledge a residual love of the Grateful Dead. Punk Rock saved me from being a Dead Head and I still love the Dead Kennedys, the Ramones, the Sex Pistols and Pere Ubu (UBU!!!!). I guess my favorite authors are John Donne, TS Eliot, Ezra Pound, the great poets in general (not Walt Whitman or Emily Dickinson and in general not the romantic poets), Kerouac, Burroughs, Nietzsche, Kierkegaard (only joking about Kierkegaard...). I haven't read Nietzsche in a long time. I really liked Ionesco and Ibsen. I could go on, but you get the drift. My favorite foods are spicy ethnic foods--Indian, Ethiopian, Thai, Moroccan, etc. I own a TV, but I don't have cable or a TV antenna, and I rarely watch it. My favorite movies are old ones. Apocalypse Now comes to mind as do Road Warrior, Terminator, Caddyshack, Animal House and Blues Brothers. I like movies where lots of stuff gets blown up and otherwise destroyed. Is that a guy thing? Or a little boy thing? Oh, and I love Fassbinder, and I almost forgot to include the Marx Brothers. Romantic comedies, not so much. Is that a guy thing? Or a little boy thing?
The six things I could never do without

I spend a lot of time thinking about
photography, music, food, what to do and lots of other things. And I think about you all the time.
On a typical Friday night I am
out listening to music or home editing photos unless my daughter is visiting in which case we're usually out eating at Ethiopian Diamond.
