My self-summary
Here's what I'm not: I'm not a partner in crime. I'm not more comfortable in a tuxedo than jeans.* I'm not afraid to go to movies alone. Definitely not ashamed to buy my nephew and niece's love; it's for sale and I'm buying. Not a vegetarian. Not above making up a word when necessary while at the same time using my OED to learn random new ones. Less a morning than a night person. I am not a republican - tried dating one once, but just can't do it.

Having said that, I cross lines with abandon, usually with sarcasm, rarely with meanness. Insatiably curious. I like red wine and bourbon and I have a fair amount of both so I'm always ready for guests. I've lived in four US cities and one overseas and I believe everyone should live abroad at least once.

*I did recently wear a morning suit for the first time and damn I looked good. Ask, it's a good story.
What I’m doing with my life
Protecting the rights of construction workers everywhere to whistle at hot women. It's a dirty job but Mike Rowe was busy.

*It appears many of you are taking this literally. Don't. Also, what's the only thing worse than having a group of construction workers whistle at you when you walk by?
I’m really good at
Making people laugh. Grilling food on my bbq and then relaxing in my hammock on my roof deck. Also good at listening. Talking. Not bad with spelling and grammar. Pretty good on a bicycle. Making a good first impression. Better at making a good eleventh impression. I seem to have a penchant for putting music lists together for friends' events.

Not too long ago I was told that I'm a coveted friend because I've got a gift for being the right guy at the right time when the shit hits the fan. That didn't suck.

Best thing said about me in maybe ever, this past weekend (6/8/13), by my nephew: "Uncle Mark is fun!" Still have the warm fuzzies.
The first things people usually notice about me
How my soul shines through like the combination of rainbows and unicorns, hearts and stars.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
I'm a media whore. W-H-O-R-E. Typically see a movie every week (just went 15-9 in my Oscar ballot, go me). Read about a book a week. Subscribe to the New Yorker and Economist, had to let New York lapse, just not enough time. Read the NYTimes. Last bunch of authors: Patrick Rothfuss, Erik Larson, Michael Chabon, Stieg Larsson, Guy Gavriel Kay, Richard Morgan, book 5 for George R. R. and Brandon Sanderson. Watch some of the usual suspects, including Modern Family, New Girl, Mythbusters, Game of Thrones, Justified, Suits, Homeland, Burn Notice, The Daily Show and a smattering of msnbc. Miss BSG. I hear live music regularly. Shows of late: The National, Hold Steady, Wye Oak, Evan Dando & Juliana Hatfield, Flaming Lips, Wild Flag, Mother Mother, Cut Copy, Bon Iver, Yuck, Foster the People, Death Cab, Anaïs Mitchell, The Feelies, Yo La Tengo, Wilco, Nick Lowe, Stephen Malkmus, Stars, Fanfarlo, Winterpills, Nada Surf, the Cure, Fiona Apple, Kurt Vile, Guided by Voices, Hollerado, Widowspeak, the xx, Here We Go Magic, Alt-J, Ambrosia Parsley. Throw in the philharmonic couple times a year.

I eat everything except things that are white or foofy, like Satanspawn, otherwise known as marshmallows or flan or whipped cream. Ugh. Being lucky enough to do a fair amount of traveling, I've tried lots of weird stuff in far away places, some I liked, some not so much. But I'm glad I always try. I will add that I'm a big fan of soup. I get it from my dad who is a huge soup guy. Soup is good.
The six things I could never do without
A, E, I, O, U and sometimes Y.
I spend a lot of time thinking about
If it's best to correct grammatical errors in other people's profiles. Precisely how I'll spend every dollar of the $250 million lotto I'm planning on winning. How meeting someone at a show or a bookstore would be terrific. And, travel. I have a rule: must use the passport at least once every calendar year. I've been very lucky over the years and have been to all the continents except antarctica.

Today, 5/16/13, is my 45th birthday and I must admit I'm thinking about finding the right woman. Birthdays do that to you, sure, and it's nothing new, but still, it's on my mind and I'm nothing if not ready to share on the internet. It's totally private and intimate, right??
On a typical Friday night I am
Doing something. Not doing something. Maybe both. Often with other people. Sometimes not.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
I was recently reminded of two of my favorite little movie monologues, one from an early 80's Terry Gilliam movie, Time Bandits, and the other from the Mel Brooks classic Blazing Saddles. Unfortunately I was reminded of them while walking down the street and I think the people around me were a bit disturbed when I started laughing for seemingly no reason...
I’m looking for
  • Girls who like guys
  • Ages 30–45
  • Near me
  • Who are single
  • For new friends, long-term dating, short-term dating
You should message me if
You respect the fact that my favorite color is green, but that I do not feel the need to drape myself in it or make it ubiquitous in my apartment. And like me you typically try to figure out which end of the subway is most efficient for your eventual exit.

Or, if you agree with me that after fifteen years and millions if not billions of web pages, the reason for the internet has finally arrived, and its promise fulfilled:
