My self-summary
I'm laid-back and inquisitive with a bit of a nerdy streak. I like learning about new things; when I was a kid I'd read all the books in the library on a subject and then move on to the next one. Now I do the same thing on Wikipedia. I can count on one hand the number of people I've met who I haven't gotten along with and I remember them because it still irks me.
What I’m doing with my life
I just moved to Victoria to do my PhD in engineering and I'm eagerly anticipating telling people I'm "not that kind of doctor". Eventually I want to become a mad scientist coming up with outlandish schemes to take over the world. Failing that, I'd settle for being a researcher coming up with reasonable schemes for managing river systems.

When I'm not working I like to get outside: hiking, camping, and climbing in the summer and snowboarding in the winter.
I’m really good at
Board games, especially Settlers of Catan. I'm also a pretty good baker and a better cook. I would like to say I'm a good gardener but my last attempt was entirely destroyed by raccoons so clearly I still have some room to improve.
The first things people usually notice about me
That I'm really, really, ridiculously good looking.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
I'm a fan of sci-fi and fantasy because I love getting lost in a world that is always different and usually cooler than reality. Standout favourites include The Moon is a Harsh Mistress and the Foundation trilogy. I recently got into a non-fiction kick and loved Thinking, Fast and Slow so I'll list it here too.

My favourite movie of all time is Jurassic Park. In hindsight I should have never seen that movie when it came out (I was four!) but I did and I loved it.

I love the first ten or so seasons of The Simpsons and still watch them occasionally. The only show I watch as it comes out is Game of Thrones. I'm only mildly upset about Strong Belwas being left out.

Music depends on my mood but jumps between indie (Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros), rock (The Black Keys), rap (MF DOOM), country (Zac Brown Band), and electronic (M83).

I don't have a favourite food; it's all gravy
The six things I could never do without
Skype. My friends and I may have moved apart but we can still hang out over the internet!

Headphones. Sometimes I just need to rock out and I'm pretty sure my neighbours would kill me if I didn't have them.

A well stocked kitchen. In fact, I think I may be addicted to kitchen gadgets.

A comfortable chair/couch: something to melt into while watching TV.

My cell phone. I need to to navigate Victoria's labyrinthine streets.

Laser eye surgery. Partly because it fixed all my vision problems, partly because reshaping a cornea with a laser is really cool.
I spend a lot of time thinking about
Recently I was given a very well decorated piece of cheesecake and while I was starving and it promised to be delicious, I also wanted to admire it. Then I realized where that saying comes from.

It's an experience that stuck with me.
On a typical Friday night I am
Rock climbing in the early evening then hitting up a bar (preferably with a patio), or playing board games, or relaxing and watching pirated HBO.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
I can't snap my fingers. I've spent hours trying but no matter what I do there's just no sound.
