My self-summary
Write a little about yourself. Just a paragraph will do.
I must be a mermaid. I have no fear of depths and a great fear of shallow living. ~Anais Nin

I'm playful, loving, creative, and I have a quick wit. Pathologically optimist. If given my druthers, I'll choose adventure over tranquility (unfurl the sails!) but I also enjoy simple pleasures of the day. I'm smart, logical and I'll beat the pants off you in Scrabble. It's especially fun to exchange ideas and agonize over politics, appreciate architecture, music, theater, to sing with passion and dance with abandon...

I've dodged twisters in Oklahoma, pursued acting in California, conducted brain mapping research in North Carolina, and I resigned a tenured professorship for love (and I'd do it again). Most recently, as a neuropsycholinguist, I've taught neurology to medical students in New England for 12 years. Relationships with students have always filled my heart and colored my life!
What I’m doing with my life
Don’t overthink this one; tell us what you’re doing day-to-day.
I'm stepping back from academia to use my time differently. I fly to Oklahoma more often to see my family, liberals living among conservatives. My mom has always been my gentle role model; somehow I'm surprised that age can fell her. She and my stepfather of 35 years have the kind of romance you read about in novels. My sister is my best friend and her husband is like a brother to me. My son, my little boy, grew up... once a young scholar, a varsity athlete at Phillips Exeter. then suddenly a man who, because of his kind heart, became an RN and works at Mass General Hospital. I love my family. I know how lucky I am.

Here in Boston, I've given away most of my psychology and neurology textbooks, and I'm returning to my roots as an aspiring singer and actress. With all modesty, my voice is quite good and I'm taking voice lessons again from a fine instructor (stellar restraint from name-dropping); surely I remember how to act...so soon I'll throw myself into the den auditions! Yea! (and yikes!)

I'm excited by these changes and now I have time to do new things. This could be a good time to meet you. Shall we travel to faraway places? Dance? Go sailing? Even doing dishes together, the dinner party over and everyone gone. The two of us together, laughing at what people said... Just being together will be nice.

By far, my favorite places to be are on or in any ocean. Sailing, canoeing, kayaking, sitting on the pier. Yes, I enjoy walking on the beach, but I wade in with skirt drenched, shoes thrown and with any luck, my purse is with my shoes. (Now where are those keys..)

Some favorites all in one breath: How the Mind Works, Annie Hall, Yo Yo Ma, Blade Runner, God Delusion, saag paneer, NPR, Nina Simone, The Language Instinct, string quartets, Mystic River, Itzhak Perlman, Aliens, Lord of the Rings Trilogy, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, almost all theater, A Prayer for Owen Meany, Winnie the Pooh, Jon Stewart, drunken noodes, Lolita, A Little Night Music, buttery chardonnay, Faust, Diana Krall, To Kill a Mockingbird, West Side Story, Joni Mitchell, and I love to move to music.
The six things I could never do without
Think outside the box. Sometimes the little things can say a lot.
~ Passion for life and ideas, not things
~ Love and support from family and friends
~ Spontaneous humor and laughter
~ Empathy and kindness
~ Logic and understanding
~ Optimism and resilience
