Are women out for the evening alone...

Apr 20, 2010

...intimidating? Appealing? Mysterious?

I go out a lot to shows (music/comedy/whatever), galleries, museums, fairs, whatever, and am frequently alone. I'm typically upbeat and having a good time at whatever it is I'm doing, but over the years, I've noticed that it's relatively unusual for me to be approached.

It's certainly possible it's just me.

But I often wonder. Do people (read: men) find a solo woman -- well, what? Anything?

An image of Psychicman7 What do you mean by "unusual for me to be approached"?

An image of BrocadeLion I mean people don't come to me and start conversations, but for very rarely. Very rarely.

An image of harpy61 I also go to things on my own, and have for many years. I'm not approached either, and I think it's a mask of self-sufficiency that puts people off. I'm much more likely to break that down these days by actually breaking the ice myself.

An image of Psychicman7 You said you are typically upbeat, may be that how you feel inside, but do you have any idea how other people see you? How often do you smile at or make eye-contact with strangers? Yourself, do you approach other people to strike a conversation?

An image of BrocadeLion Okay, not really trying to get myself analyzed here, Psychicman. Just asking for people's opinions on the (female) Lone Wolf.

An image of tumuso From my male perspective this is a balancing act. If I approach a lone woman, would I be perceived as a potential stalker? My first assumption is that "if she's alone, she wants to be alone".

An image of harpy61 I think it's the eye contact that is the main point. I certainly feel uncomfortable making eye contact with strangers, as it seems to invite an intimacy that I'm not sure I want, and won't be sure I want until I have it. But that's me.

An image of Psychicman7 ^^ Sorry, I didn't mean to sound patronizing, but I guess I did.
