My self-summary
Write a little about yourself. Just a paragraph will do.
I'm reasonably intelligent and fit, tolerant and open-minded, straight but not narrow. I am utterly silly and hilariously cynical. I like to cook, I enjoy traveling and being outside, I love listening to and playing jazz (I play trumpet and sax), but I also enjoy blues, classic rock, Celtic, funk, Flamenco...the list (and the music) goes on. I have a lot of fun playing at being a photographer - even if I'm not a "pro", whatever that means, it has at least taught me to pay more attention to all the beauty both great and small in the world. I have a hard time avoiding too many parenthetical statements when I write. I prefer cats to dogs, though dogs are cool too. I see no reason why one is required to believe in some sort of Supreme Being or Omnipotent Father-Figure in order to maintain a sense of honesty and integrity and be kind and considerate to everyone. I also think this sort of self-summarizing is practically impossible to do well, and if you haven't clicked the Back button yet I'd prefer to get to know each other over a beverage or snack.
What I’m doing with my life
Don’t overthink this one; tell us what you’re doing day-to-day.
Stripping away the BS, bit by bit, day by day, year by year...
I’m really good at
Go on, brag a little (or a lot). We won’t judge.
Playing Well With Others. Also biting sarcasm toward people and situations that need it, "punching up" not down.
The first things people usually notice about me

I'm bald, bearded, have permanent laugh lines, and I've got a good voice.

I like books, movies, music, and food. There, I've admitted it! I know that's a controversial attitude, but I stand by my words.

I know that's pretty vague. But my tastes are so eclectic - i.e. "all over the map" - that it's tough to delineate them in a meaningful, nutshell way. I like both fiction and non-fiction, foreign films and Hollywood and comedies, all sorts of music (though mostly jazz), and Portland's many amazing restaurants offering just about every kind of cuisine ... does that help?
The six things I could never do without
Think outside the box. Sometimes the little things can say a lot.
Maslow's Hierarchy? No? OK then, how about: basic necessities, humor, the never-ending quest for knowledge, music, and my camera. I know that's less than six things, but screw you man, I'm a rebel!!!
I spend a lot of time thinking about
Global warming, lunch, or your next vacation… it’s all fair game.
Keeping whimsy and silliness in my life. What is it about society - or Life in general - or something, that too often squeezes all the juice and verve out of so many of us over-40 crowd? Do we get caught up in the necessities of creating a career and raising kids, and in the process forget how to be goofy and enthusiastic and child-like? Do we get so disappointed about not keeping the bodies and energy of our youth that we just give up? Does the burden of the awareness of encroaching mortality suck out whatever liveliness is still left in us? Is it the death of childhood dreams? Can we not reassess, create new goals, and continue to reach beyond our grasp? Is there some reason that many of us stop learning and being surprised and constantly delighted by new knowledge? Is Social Convention really so inexorable an encumbrance?

Also, y'know, World Hunger and Climate Change and War and Equality and stuff.

Netflix and takeout, or getting your party on — how do you let loose?
"Living for the weekend"? Searching for a Life with Authenticity and Meaning? Re-watching Monty Python videos? Looking for the exact proper word in my beloved thesaurus? On a typical Friday night I am...being atypical. Moving on....
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
I’m an empty essay… fill me out!
It probably says an unflattering lot about me that aside from Calvin & Hobbes collections, the number of times I've re-read Douglas Adams' Hitchhiker's Guide series (especially if you include the original radio series on tape) far surpasses the number of times I've re-read any other book.

Spoiler alert: I have no creepy nor dashingly romantic secrets.

you're smart and smart-assed, wise and goofy, you know a thing or two about a thing or two, are committed to honesty and communication, and are appropriately grown-up for your years yet you're still willing to let your inner child come out and play. And you have a high tolerance for puns. And you don't have to love the Three Stooges, but you're okay with the fact that they WILL make me giggle inanely sometimes.
