Go ahead and move on to the next guy if:
- you think you're not creative
- you don't like the sun
- "OMG I lost my cellphone!!! How will I survive???," hysterical, gushing tears
- all your friends are the same ethnicity and class
- nightclubs are more interesting to you than Nature
- you think soil is dirty
- travel to less developed countries would scare you
- family is not important to you
I am looking for a convincing connection to see where it might take us.
What I’m doing with my life
Is following my passions, values, high ambition, and having a whole lot of fun along the way. I believe in acting on beliefs and solving problems, not just talking about them.
I’m really good at
Connecting with all sorts of people and building communities, writing for print and public speaking, hosting a party and selecting good music, getting into the mountains, urban farming (I have been using a pitchfork to bale hay since my youth, this is ain't no hippie hipster thang), eating and just sometimes, cooking, sports that involve throwing objects or hitting them with sticks, knowing the gems of California that other natives don't know, being creative or romantic with outings . . .
I could easily make a longer list of my weaker abilities. The first item on the list would be ice skating.
The first things people usually notice about me
Depends in which part of the world I am. If I am in sub-Saharan Africa it is that I am white. If I am in northern Brazil it's my light skin and blue eyes. In East Asia I get tall and strong a lot. In the US it's often my confident voice and calm presence.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
I look for music with soul in it. I tend towards hiphop and R&B day-to-day, but dabble in all kinds of genres.
I like stories of triumph or tragedy or a time and place now past like Life is Beautiful or City of God. I like documentaries too, and absurdist comedy. On the literary front I grew up in Steinbeck country, Kundera, Allende, Voltaire, Zinn, Muir, Schell. I like magazines - The Sun, Seed, Economist, New Yorker, National Geographic, Lapham's Quarterly.
Food? I am definitely live to eat. Good food and cooking is central in my family, and a reason to travel. I can't say I favor any particular cuisine. Tonight, I'll want injera and tibs, tomorrow feijoada, the next sashimi or ceviche . . . better stop. I'm getting hungry. Let's get to the market and then make dinner together. I'm into that.
The six things I could never do without
Fresh fruits and vegetables
Sense of purpose
My mother's unconditional love
I spend a lot of time thinking about
How to help humanity make the shift from unsustainable and
violence-based in our power structures to sustainable and more
