My self-summary
Write a little about yourself. Just a paragraph will do.
I was born and raised in New York, finished out a graduate program at Syracuse University a few years ago, and found work and a place to live in Montgomery County, which is where I've been ever since. I live in a great neighborhood in an outermost shell of DMV suburbia with a handful of housemates. I also own a mixed breed dog named Chloe; she keeps me company and only occasionally chews up important things.

I seem to alternate between the lifestyle of a 22 year old and, oh, maybe a 68 year old for weeks at a time - I love heading downtown and meeting friends in Tenleytown or DuPont, or out of town for a hike, but I'm just as happy having a bonfire at home, watching Netflix in my pajamas, or just tucking in early. Conversely, I do my best to cook healthy, nutritious meals at home, like, you know, an adult; but I can and do backslide into high-octane crap if I allow myself.

I have strong opinions on a variety of subjects, which I'm always happy to volunteer, discuss and defend in the right context, but I'm (mostly) not one to throw them out unannounced. I was raised Catholic, but have always centered more on a sort of inquisitive agnosticism. I'm happy for people that are able to use their faith to enrich their lives, but I have no patience for those that think it gives them license to administer their opinions on morality to others. Fuck those people.

I'm interested in meeting people who might share my interests - or at least, have some interesting stories to tell - and might be up for challenging them over a good cup of coffee. (or whiskey or ipa, of course) Romance, friends, what have you - I think in-depth conversations online are only as important as what it means in person.

Also - I took the Meyers-Briggs personality test at the start of grad school, and I think it's a load of crap. The multitude of profiles on here that reference their prescribed personality categories right up front, with confirmation-biased warnings about personality traits, are getting rather silly. If you disagree with me, perhaps you should read this:
What I’m doing with my life
Don’t overthink this one; tell us what you’re doing day-to-day.
Working through the first few years of my first job in this huge, confusing, ambitious region - just trying to stay busy, meet interesting people, and have a reasonable amount of fun in the process. I love the challenges of a new environment, but I do miss New York...not being a half-hour drive from my sisters anymore really sucks, especially now that I have two young nieces and, most recently, a baby nephew.
I’m really good at
Go on, brag a little (or a lot). We won’t judge.
● Deep diving into a new or interesting topic/issue and then deploying related minutiae when it's warranted (and sometimes when it's not)
● Drawing/sketching, (though I haven't sat down to seriously do it in awhile)
● Guitar (thankfully much more often)
● Back rubs
● Navigating around fellow MoCo drivers, many of whom apparently haven't been introduced to the concept of turn signals (or proper lane change maneuvers)
● Hiking, biking, snowboarding, frisbee, soccer, and other outdoorsy things
The first things people usually notice about me
I’m an empty essay… fill me out!
Either my height or my beard...the latter has provoked observations ranging from 'sexy' to 'distinguished' to 'ginger.' Still not sure what to make of that last one.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
Help your potential matches find common interests.
● Michael Chabon, GRR Martin, Kurt Vonnegut
● Mad Men, Game of Thrones, Boardwalk Empire, Breaking Bad, Justified, and other high-ambition shows; Gangs of New York, In the Loop, Inside Man, the French Connection, Master and Commander, Fight Club, Annie Hall, the Big Lebowski, and other assorted dumb comedies and period piece dramas
● Modest Mouse, Built to Spill, Deerhunter, the Walkmen, the Mountain Goats, Feist, Fiona Apple, alternative rock, bluegrass, jazz, and a mess of other styles/genres. In general, I love going to see almost any type of live music.
The six things I could never do without
Think outside the box. Sometimes the little things can say a lot.
● the handful of good friends I've made since moving here
● my family: mom and dad, sisters, niece(s) and nephew
● music of all varieties and genres
● a guitar of some sort
● high fantasy novels, contemporary nonfiction
● my snowboard (and snowbound mountains, naturally)
I spend a lot of time thinking about
Global warming, lunch, or your next vacation… it’s all fair game.
Space, the universe, death, the natural world, evolutionary biology, environmental policy, history, international politics, whether or not I left the stove on, etc.
On a typical Friday night I am
Netflix and takeout, or getting your party on — how do you let loose?
Down in Bethesda or (when the mood strikes) DuPont Circle or U Street for a few drinks. Less typically, hanging around Rockville with some combination of my four housemates. (Did I mention that I have four housemates?)
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
I’m an empty essay… fill me out!
I've never been farther west than Colorado. I know, I know; I don't know what I'm missing. I'm trying to schedule a trip to visit my cousin in San Diego. I'd really like to see the West Coast, and I've wanted to visit Mount St Helens since I was a kid.

You have a goofy and slightly inappropriate sense of humor, or if you're wonkish, slightly nerdy, or a healthy combination thereof. An affinity for dogs would be a definite plus.
