My self-summary
Write a little about yourself. Just a paragraph will do.
I love travel, probably more than anything else (that profile pic was taken on my sister's boat in Ireland), but I'm also happy to read and relax on the couch. I miss New York--the bars, clubs, theaters, museums, random encounters, et al. But I also enjoy my life on the CT waterfront, where I've now lived for 10 years. I'm passionate about my work, especially writing and teaching, and appreciate those who feel the same about their professional lives. I definitely need to be around people with a good sense of humor, with an ironic sense about life in general (no irony deficiencies please)--like Oscar Wilde said, "Life's too important to be taken seriously." I have excellent friends, though many are scattered about the globe, and a very close family (also many of them scattered about the globe).
What I’m doing with my life
Don’t overthink this one; tell us what you’re doing day-to-day.
I teach American literature and publish and travel a good deal. There's more, of course, but that can wait.
I’m really good at
Go on, brag a little (or a lot). We won’t judge.
Getting my bearings in strange places, staying calm in tight spots, writing on deadline, Socratic instruction, making bloody marys (especially on Sunday mornings), storytelling, juggling.
The first things people usually notice about me
I’m an empty essay… fill me out!
My height, I suppose. Then it's anyone's guess.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
Help your potential matches find common interests.
Eugene O'Neill, Herman Melville, Stephen Crane, Edith Wharton, John Dos Passos, Langston Hughes on up to Sherman Alexie, Don Dellilo, Annie Proulx, Jonathan Franzen, and Alice McDermott. Favorite music continues to be Jane's Addiction, Cop Shoot Cop, the Beastie Boys, the Pixies, Killing Joke, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Jon Spencer, Fishbone, Murphy's Law, et al--What can I say, I came into my musical own in the late eighties/early nineties, and damned proud of it. (I do love The White Stripes--best band of our century.) Movies? Anything by the Cohen Brothers, Wes Anderson, and Michael Mann; anything that takes place in Ireland, and lots of classics.
The six things I could never do without
Think outside the box. Sometimes the little things can say a lot.
My books, enough money to travel, NPR, coffee, Irish Whiskey, my house, and on it goes.
I spend a lot of time thinking about
Global warming, lunch, or your next vacation… it’s all fair game.
The future, and, at the moment, Egypt's future.
On a typical Friday night I am
Netflix and takeout, or getting your party on — how do you let loose?
Eating at a local restaurant, drinking at a local pub, going to a movie, reading/watching tv at home, taking the train into New York.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
I’m an empty essay… fill me out!
I was gently coerced by my sister, now visiting from Ireland, to try this.
