I am curious, bright, and flighty.

My Self-Summary

I am a southern gentleman looking to learn more about Hawaii. I moved here from Texas in July 2009. I enjoy cooking and thinking about food. I have been known to enjoy crosswords and sudoku. I enjoy photographing landscapes and people watching. Rockclimbing is my outdoor activity of choice with barbequeing a close second. I am very fond of most not-going-to-eat-me animals except for ferrets and birds. My current culinary project is wine fondue.

I do not do well with children. A long time ago while standing in line a child (9 or 10 years old) asked me "What if you were a child and nobody liked you?" I responded, "I was. They didn't."

I was diagnosed with Essential Tremor in 2003, but have dealt with it far longer. This means that I shake all over and that I cannot/will not do certain activities, but am very good at others. Handwriting more than 100 words or so exhausts me, but I can crank out martinis all day long.

What I’m doing with my life

I am currently a student at KCC with plans on transferring to Manoa and eventually getting a Master's in chemical engineering.

I am attempting to learn Japanese in my free time with the help of Rosetta Stone. It is not going as well as I had hoped, but not as badly as I feared. After finals, I will buckle down and make some progress.

I’m really good at

Breakfast, growing up if I wanted breakfast I had to cook it myself, not because of a bad childhood or anything like that. One day my mom said "if you want waffles make 'em yourself or have some cereal" while handing me a cookbook opened to a waffle recipe.

The first things people usually notice about me

My hair, when it is dry it comes down to my shoulders. I keep it in a ponytail most of the time. When I am at the beach my hair isn't quite as noticable as my hilarious farmer's tan. I frequently appear to be lost in thought, while this is true; it is worth noting that I am also frequently lost in the physical sense, since I have a terrible sense of direction.

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

I love scif-fi. David Weber, John Ringo, and David Eddings are my favorite authors. I tend to stick with light books. If I was forced to choose the 3 I like best they would be: Armor by John Steakley, The Adventures of the Stainless Steel Rat by Harry Harrison, and The Artifact by W. Michael Gear. George R.R. Martin's Song of Ice and Fire was a great series up until Feast of Crows. I carry a copy of the Tao almost everywhere I go.

I am fairly open about music, except I cannot stand tejano and rap. Swing, soft rock, and classical are my three favorite types. I frequently enjoy Willie Nelson, Celtic Women, Ben Folds, Frank Sinatra, and Mingo Fishtrap.

My favorite flicks are Big Trouble in Little China, Road to Perdition, The Count of Monte Cristo (I really need to read that), Army of Darkness, Caveman, A Christmas Story, Conan, When Harry Met Sally, Hudson Hawk, and Better Off Dead.

I will eat just about anything except haggis, sushi (yes I know), menudo, and rocky mountain oysters. Lasagna is one of my favorite foods.

The six things I could never do without

tobacco, Chopin, cheese, MY Blanket, a cast iron skillet, and books.

I spend a lot of time thinking about

vertical farms and my morals. I recently had an unpleasent epiphany and realized that I have been lying to myself for a long time. I am currently having to rebuild the basis for my morals (why I believe 'x' is right/wrong). I spend quite a bit of time thinking about vertical farms, because well I think they're cool, not practical (yet) but still cool.

On a typical Friday night I am

watching TV (probably Burn Notice or Family Guy, but possibly Firefly or Farscape), cooking and trying not to think about all the homework I will be doing on Saturday and Sunday.

The most private thing I’m willing to admit here

I would love to have access to a giant pacific octopus. I don't think I could handle having one as a pet, but I would love to be able to hang out with one a few times a week, whenever I felt like it. I think they are the coolest critters on the planet.

I can just imagine the evolutionary bureaucratic checklist.
Intelligence: Excellent (4)
Camouflage: Awesome (5)
Poison: Excellent (4)
Escape/Evasion: Excellent (4)
Bureaucrate "Ok, I see here you wish to be called the Giant Pacific Octopus. Well you have numerous desirable abilities and those come with a price."
Octopus "Ok sounds fair to me."
Bureaucrate "First sex, you will almost always die shortly after having sex. If you choose to be a lifelong virgin you will not live more than 5 years."
Octopus "Oh nuts. I'm boned."
Bureaucrate "Funny you should mention that..."

I really like grammatically correct lolcats. Goonies is my guilty pleasure flick. I can't stand sweet tea and sweet potato casserole(there goes my non-native Texan registration). There are two musicals that I really enjoy seeing again and again (and there goes my manly man card). I am very shy.

You should message me if

You desire some company for a trip to the Bishop Museum.

You are bored and have a particular subject in mind you wish to discuss.

You have a recipe that you think I will get a kick out of (hint:cheesecake, sweet potato waffles, no dressing fruit salad).
