I’m a genuinely kind, thoughtful guy with the soul and talent of a musician and writer, and a business career that uses my creative and marketing skills. I have an uncommon combination of wit, sensitivity, street smarts, and a dash of East Coast edge, smoothed out by long-time residence in California.
Likes include reading, writing, a good swim or workout, hanging with my three godchildren, cinema, spending time with friends, eating out, sleeping in, meditating, walks, dancing to a good Salsa band, playing music, and international travel. I went to Rome last September and Rio (again) last January. NYC (where I grew up) and Spain are on my 2016 itinerary.
I'm seeking someone who's intelligent, kind, and very warm, with humor, vibrancy, a supportive nature, an interest in the arts -- especially music -- and an affinity for psychological/spiritual growth.
I'm in good shape, go to the gym regularly, swim, and enjoy an occasional hike or getaway to the coast. That said, I don't head for the hills or the trails every weekend. I usually prefer a concert, movie, picnic, restaurant with friends, or playing music (with friends or at a gig). Or all of the above.
What I’m doing with my life
Experiencing its rich tapestry. Okay, that sounds pretentious. I work a little too much these days, but I’m generally pretty happy; the only missing piece is a long-term partner.
I’m really good at
Playing music, writing, playing with children, long-term friendships with grownups, languages, listening, sharing affection, analyzing things and people (it comes with a writer's mind), telling good jokes and interesting stories, and discussing everything from world affairs to spiritual paths to pop culture to particle physics.
The first things people usually notice about me
My eyes and my smile
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
Music: playing and listening to most anything in the Western music tradition from Renaissance ("early music") to modern, jazz, classic rock, world music, salsa, Brazilian samba, pagode, forro, and sambareggae (bonus points if you’ve even heard of the last 3).
I love poetry—immediate gratification, mind candy, and soul food rolled into one. Billy Collins, Mary Oliver, Yeats, Rumi, Sharon Olds, Antonio Machado, and many more. I like fiction too but haven’t gravitated to it lately. Looking forward to reading Keith Richards’ autobiography and Brian Greene’s latest book. Cosmology is the bomb.
My taste in movies is all over the place. Some faves are Fargo, Inglorious Basterds, Beasts of the Southern Wild, A Theory of Everything, American Hustle, and all of the Alien movies. Loved the Amy Winehouse documentary -- such an amazing talent, and such a sad outcome.
TV: Yup, I own one and watch the good stuff. Boardwalk Empire, The Daily Show (I miss Jon Stewart and The Colbert Report!), The Wire, Mad Men, Deadwood, Justified, Game of Thrones. Louie, True Detective. All of which have finished their runs. Damn.
I listen to NPR a lot. BBC news, too.
Food-wise, I’m an omnivore, skewing (or skewering?) toward the healthy end of the spectrum. I like sampling new restaurants, and enjoy about the same range of cuisines as most people, though very spicy-hot isn't for me.
The six things I could never do without
Music, my 3 godchildren, great friends, humor, meditation, good food, chocolate. Humor might top the list: it saves lives. Math didn't make the cut, though I'm fascinated by cosmology and quantum theory.
I spend a lot of time thinking about
Whether I should work less and play more these days. What I notice is -- oh wait, I have a project due tomorrow.
On a typical Friday night I am
Good chance I'm doing one of these three: playing for a samba dance
class in SF in the early evening, having dinner with a friend or
two, or working late and then hitting the gym (one reason I’m on
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
(1) I'm not quite addicted to my cell phone. I realize that's unusual these days. (2) I just don't "get" golf; never have, probably never will. (3) I went to a live WWE show with my 2 godsons when they were in their early teens. I think I'll stop there.
You should message me if
You'd like to see if we have chemistry and possibilities. On that score: This is a dating site, folks -- physical appearance is part of the equation. Please have more than one photo, including a full-body shot or two. If not, one gets the impression that you feel you've got something to hide.
