I am savvy, serene, and embracing the storm.

My Self-Summary

I’m in Quantico, VA right now and will have limited internet access until mid-December. My 10-week rite of passage has started...

My name is Colt. I consider myself an artistic individual with an analytical mindset and above-average interest in exercise and nutrition (“fitness-minded dork” is probably a better way of putting it).

I enjoy doing creative things like drawing, writing, nature photography and playing my guitar and keyboard. Maybe this has a cathartic effect as emotions seldom dictate my day-to-day actions. I like reading, discussing politics, and being an information sponge for anything that piques my interest.

I work out 5-6 days a week and consider CrossFit to be the best functional fitness methodology there is. I love hiking, camping and backpacking and would like to take a mountaineering course in the future and maybe even hike the entire Appalachian Trail. I’ve gone skiing once and next time I want to try snowboarding, or for that matter any other outdoor activities that present themselves. I also wanna learn how to swing dance like they do in Back to the Future (acrobatics with girls wearing sock hop skirts looks like a lot of fun.) Finally, I occasionally play video games (particularly older ones), but I find far more enjoyment in playing with others than I do alone, much like anything else that I do.

What I’m doing with my life

Almost all of my electives in high school were art classes, but in college I learned that artistic abstracts were better relegated to hobbies.

I graduated with a degree in Industrial Engineering, but the occupation isn't athletic or adventurous enough, so on October 1st I will be returning to Officer Candidates School to become an officer in the Marine Corps. I was there last fall, but suffered a bad injury and had to be sent home. I had to wait an entire year before I could go back.

I voted for Obama last election, so quite a few people who share my political views consider the military to be a bunch of baby killers. Why am I breaking the mold? I want to finally give back to my country. I want to see the world. I want to challenge myself in ways that few would dare attempt.

I’m really good at

being impartial and open-minded with people.

The first things people usually notice about me

(Excerpt from a conversation with my CrossFit Trainer about high school.)

Trainer: Don’t take this the wrong way Colt, but high school is NOT your age group.

I guess he was saying that I’m mature?

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

“Will you make a song for him?” the woman asked.
“He has a song,” the man replied. “He is the prince that was promised, and his is the song of ice and fire.”

This is one rockin’ book series! I’ve been waiting forever for the next book to come out. I’ve also read all the Harry Potter books (who hasn’t?) and earlier this year I finally read the Watchmen graphic novel - just plain outstanding. It was very philosophical about the morality and nature of humanity. I'm currently reading a war novel called One Bullet Away.

Movies…a bouillabaisse of randomness. I’m going to start off by saying The Dark Knight is the film of the decade. When I’m not in the mood for doom & gloom, I also occasionally watch childhood favorites such as The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, or Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. I also enjoy Titanic and Gone with the Wind (many men would probably try to crucify me for saying that; I’ll take them all on!) There’s also the epics like 300, Pirates of the Caribbean, Lord of the Rings, and Troy. I also love a lot of 80s comedies, like Spaceballs, Fast Times at Ridgemont High, and Airplane!. Some of the TV shows I’m into are Arrested Development, The Daily Show, The Colbert Report, The X-Files, South Park, and Mad Men.

Music? I shant be confined by so limited a word as “everything!” My favorite band is Dream Theater, but I’ve also been caught listening to jazz, metal, blues, classic rock, even video game music. See? I do have a dorky side.

I take my health very seriously, but since I grew up in the South I’ll always have a weakness for biscuits. When I can get away from those fluffy lumps of awesomeness, I eat veggies, some fruit, lean meats, and nuts. If anything, I've become much better at cooking because of it. I also drink a gallon of water a day.

I spend a lot of time thinking about

Ways to become a better person, or how prior proper planning prevents piss-poor performance.

On a typical Friday night I am

If I’m spending my Friday night outdoors it probably means I’m camping or backpacking somewhere. Nights spent indoors with friend usually involve vinyl records, making fun of bad movies, Texas Hold 'Em, old school video games (Mega Man 3 is a surprisingly good party game), sometimes even board games.

I don't care much for the clubbing or partying scene. I like going to big wild parties occasionally, but they lose their appeal if they become too commonplace.

If I’m on my own for the night, I’ll find some crazy way of keeping myself occupied. I hate having nothing to do.

The most private thing I’m willing to admit here

When I was five, I got my head stuck in a chair. One can only be proud of such a bizarre accident. A few months later I successfully fed a grilled cheese sandwich to a VCR. A few years later I was watering a garden and somehow set the flowers on fire. I was a strange kid.

One time, I stumbled across the profile of my own mother on this site. It. Was. Awkward.
