I am wry, rational, and randomtastic.

My Self-Summary

I'm a great ally, a good boyfriend, a friendly stranger, and a (sometimes) strange friend. My patience is long, my wit is quick, and words are my medium. I'm serious about not taking life too seriously...and about the oxford comma (but not capitalization). I'm still figuring myself out, but so far I think I like what I've found. I try to look for the best in everything and everyone, but I don't suffer fools. I pity them. I'm quick with a joke, or to light up your smoke, and there's no place that I'd rather be.

I'm Rob Gordon from High Fidelity, with shorter lists and smaller stacks.

Intellect>Ambition
Humor>Reverence
Talk-Action=Shite

Where do you fit into this equation...wait, it's a logic puzzle. Dammit, math was never my strong suit.

What I’m doing with my life

Talking to strangers on the internet, obv. Trying to make the most with what I've got, starting with the grad degree that's beginning to gather dust. I try to be grateful for what I have rather than regretful of what I don't...and I've got a lot. Who I am is a bigger part of what I do than the other way around.

I'm pretty sure that half of life is just about showing up and the rest is paying attention, so I do. Especially when there's food and drink to be had.

I’m really good at

Trivia, deconstructing arguments, making omelets on the rare occasions that I attempt to do so, answering the phone (it's a lost art) and explaining things over it, ordering at restaurants, navigating in locations familiar and otherwise, arranging and moving furniture, punctuating, being punctual, proofreading, remembering obscure dates, and probably some other stuff. But I'm terrible at packing a suitcase.

The first things people usually notice about me

Physically I'm tall...that's not to say that I'm mentally short but it's easier to notice from across a room than that, for instance, I'm an Art Deco enthusiast (which I am). Once you get up close you may notice that I lack a filter, and hopefully you find that hilarious, charming, or otherwise acceptable. My mind is agile, my tongue is nimble, and I'm at least an average dancer.

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

Are all really good.

I tend toward:
--non-fiction, door-stopping tomes. STILL reading Gotham, the history of New York City; 1300 pages and it only goes up to 1898! Scintillating! Favorites among fiction: Chabon, Lethem, Fitzgerald, et al.
--cathartic or chaotic films that make me think or laugh. I don't go to the movies nearly enough, but I love to talk about them. When I do I'm a huge fan of dollar night at the Arlington Drafthouse ($1 movie + beer = good)
--artists that push the envelope while building upon time-tested tradition. Over the summer I saw Wilco @ Wolftrap and it was awesome, despite Jeff Tweedy singling me out for not clapping along during the encore. Even that was kind of awesome. Yo La Tengo, TV on the Radio, Brian Jonestown Massacre, all at 9:30, also awesome.
--I prefer to indulge in the cheesy/greasy/salty/fried variety of edibles (vice sweets), but am up to try just about anything. That goes for the other categories, too (within reason. I've got a life to live here).

The six things I could never do without

Chewing gum (Extra Winterfresh or, ideally, Supermint, if I can ever find it again), information, (bourbon) whiskey, live and televised sporting events, and antacid, almost literally, along with a variety of organic and inorganic substances.

I spend a lot of time thinking about

The future. The past. The present. Presents. What's for lunch. What pants to wear...or not. Things that never happened, or never, ever will. What will make me happy, and the people around me. Highlights of my life and how to make new ones. Superpowers...

On a typical Friday night I am

Out. About. Doing something. With friends. Enjoying a cocktail or several. Traveling elsewhere to do partake in said activities. I'm up for whatev.

The most private thing I’m willing to admit here

My greatest fear is something I love, i.e. a museum, specifically the famous squid vs. whale diorama at the Museum of Natural History in New York. ***shudder***

You should message me if

You cracked a smile, or the mental equivalent, somewhere in the course of reading this. Thanks for that, by the way. You like meeting new people and are sure of yourself without being full of yourself. You can talk at length about minutiae, or not at all. You believe laughter is the best medicine but are open to employing other kinds. If your type is tall, dark, snarky, and smart, we should talk.
