I am educated, curious, and musical.

My Self-Summary

I do my best to keep in mind that I am a work in progress. For example, I recently experienced a significant change in my attitude toward mustard.

I listen to NPR. I wear cowboy boots every day, and a hat fairly regularly. I have a degree from the U of M in political science, which I earned after briefly attending a music school in Saint Paul.

I take care of myself physically and spiritually. I consider myself a work in progress, and can point to many areas in which I have become a better person over the last few years. I plan to continue this trend.

UPDATE: It is Mustache Month. I am currently sporting something that resembles a mustache. It will be with me through November. Maybe longer.

What I’m doing with my life

I work in the home brewing industry, and I play guitar semi-professionally. I recently got bit by the country music bug. I listen to a lot of bluegrass and classic country, and practice playing those styles daily. I own and make use of a banjo.

I’m really good at

writing and performing music, engaging people in conversation, playing the devil's advocate, and, on occasion, saying or doing things that could be classified as funny.

The first things people usually notice about me

Lately, it's probably the cowboy hat. My teeth are straight, clean, and white, and tend to get a bit of attention here and there.

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

I love Hunter S. Thompson and Kurt Vonnegut. I recently read my first Steinbeck novel, and plan to follow it with another.

I appreciate all sorts of music. Some current favorites include: Bela Fleck, Zakir Hussain, and Edgar Meyer, Brad Paisley, classic bluegrass, modern bluegrass, Muse, Wilco, Bach, John Scofield, and Brad Paisley. I realize that I mentioned Paisley twice. He earned it.

I'm a meat and potatoes kind of guy, but I'm working on it. I recently discovered the joy of spicy food, and test my limits in that arena when the spirit moves me.

The six things I could never do without

Guitars, a pull up bar, Oreo McFlurries, a good pair of boots, a toothbrush, and clean towels.

I spend a lot of time thinking about

Life. The Universe. The Nature of Existence.

Those are a bit cliche, but it's true. Every now and then it gets to be a bit overwhelming and odd. I have a pretty solid story that I've written for myself, and it seems to work for me, but I remain open to new information/insights.

I also spend quite a bit of time thinking about why I can't get my fingers to do exactly what I'd like them to do on a guitar.

On a typical Friday night I am

playing a show with a pop country band.

The most private thing I’m willing to admit here

...I have a lame tattoo.

It's rarely visible. It's a frat-too. I got it when I was 19, and slightly drunk. I don't regret it. I find it pretty funny, and forget it's there most of the time. It will eventually be turned into something less "I was 19 and drunk when I decided to do this" as soon as I find a decent artist, a design I like, and the desire to spend more money on tattooing myself.
