My self-summary
I love to laugh! I love spending time with people that can make me laugh. If you can make me laugh, we’ll get along famously.

I am a native Torontonian living midtown with my cat named Bacon. I loved growing up in downtown Toronto, and I think it informed a lot about me as an adult: I’m quite liberal, I don’t drive, I’m used to being squashed in a subway car against strangers and I have to remind myself that snow should be white and not grey/black.

I have an incredible group of friends, and a wonderful family. I have been very fortunate in my friends and family thus far in my life. My friends are an eclectic group of artists (and some non-artists) and my family is a group of weirdos. I can always count on my friends and family for a laugh, or support through more difficult times.

I want to do more traveling very soon. I’ve been to England (twice), Ireland, France, Sweden, Scotland, Iceland, Victoria, New York and most recently, Costa Rica. I’m thinking that I want to go to New Zealand next!
What I’m doing with my life
I’m currently in school doing my PhD in theatre while also working part-time at a restaurant as a host supervisor and general office slave.

My studies take up a lot of my time, but I’m “almost” finished (“almost” being another 16 months…). I think the best part about being a PhD student is the opportunity I get to be a teaching assistant. I adore it. I TA for a first-year theatre history course, and year after year I get to engage with young, passionate people – FOR MONEY! Not too shabby.

I’m a little hot and cold when it comes to the restaurant job. When the people are nice, it’s great! When the people are crappy, it’s one of the circles of Dante’s hell.

I’m not quite sure what I want to do when I “grow-up”, but ideally I would like to get some traveling in. Maybe teach in another country (or countries)? Maybe stay here and teach? Maybe go back to school to become a Midwife? I’m open!
I’m really good at
Arts and crafts, relating to people, awful dancing, puns, sci-fi references and making origami cranes.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
Books (fiction): The World According to Garp (and many other books by John Irving), Pride and Prejudice (and all the other Jane Austen books).

Books (nonfiction): The Selfish Gene (Richard Dawkins), In Defence of Food (Michael Pollan), The Third Chimpanzee (Jared Diamond), The Canadian Dictionary of ASL.

Movies: Star Wars, Braveheart, The Shawshank Redemption, Schindler's List, A History of Violence, Funny People, The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Out of Africa… many more.

Shows: The Kids In The Hall (I grew up on this show), The Office (British), Father Ted, Star Trek (all franchises except the original…), Cosmos (“Billlllllions and billlllllllllllions”), Battlestar Galactica (the remake), Arrested Development (May can't come quickly enough!) and any nature documentary by David Attenborough (which leads me to my favourite drinking game: http://distilleryimage2.s3.amazonaws.com/f074372e542111e18bb812313804a181_7.jpg).

Food: Cranberry sauce, cod, cucumber, balsamic vinegar, baked potatoes… I tend to be a very simple eater. I am, however, always excited about trying new foods!
The six things I could never do without
1. My cell phone (pathetic, but true)
2. My friends and family (not technically “things”, but important!)
3. Teddy Doggie (my teddy childhood teddy bear)
4. Comfortable shoes
5. 24-hour grocery store in walking distance of my house
6. Hair ties (I hate wearing my hair down!)
I spend a lot of time thinking about
The next trip I want to go on, my next meal, a gaping hole in my thesis, what the hell I'm doing with my life.
On a typical Friday night I am
Working. Answering questions about reservations, making families wait 30 minutes until they can get a table, drinking black coffee, trying to ignore my aching feet, making fart jokes with my coworkers.
