I have a passion for everything interesting. Puzzles to solve,
questions to ponder, and shiny things to examine. New people, for
example, are always interesting. :-) I like to see the beautiful
and intriguing aspects of everything around me - there's no place,
person or situation that doesn't have a fascinating and compelling
aspect if you're prepared to look closely.
My perfect evening would include a look around a museum, gallery or
bookshop, a nice meal out, a cup of good coffee and a moonlit walk
by the river. Good conversation is an essential for an enjoyable
time, and I like to think I can hold up my end of the
bargain.
So if that sounds like a nice idea to you - and you don't mind
someone who's a bit geeky now and then - get in touch!
I'm a graduate physics student. I don't know where I'll find myself
once the PhD is finished!
I'm an expert in enjoying things I'm _not_ really good at -
singing, dancing, chess, poker, art- and lit-crit, baking, and many
others.
As to my "real" talents - analytical thinking and maths, for
starters. Kind of essential in my line of work. Also public
speaking. And like most Sci-Fi geeks, I've tried a hand at writing
my own stuff, and I think some of it isn't bad.
I sound a bit like David Mitchell. :-)
I love the
science fiction genre, and
literary fiction that touches on the weird or the fantastic. If I
had to hang on to the three books I treasure most, they would be
Foucault's Pendulum, Borges' short story collection Labyrinths, and
The Book of the New Sun.
And the last one's cheating, because it's a collection of four
books. :-)
A longer list of fave books would be:
Foucault's Pendulum (Umberto Eco); The Name Of The Rose (Umberto
Eco); The Book of the New Sun (Gene Wolfe); Use of Weapons (Iain M.
Banks); If On A Winter's Night A Traveller (Italo Calvino); The
Castle of Crossed Destinies (Italo Calvino); The Dark Tower
(Stephen King); Lord of Light (Roger Zelazny); Labyrinths (J.L.
Borges); The City and the Stars (Arthur C. Clarke); The Road to
Reality (Roger Penrose); Watchmen (Alan Moore);
Fell (Warren Ellis); Sandman Mystery Theatre (Wagner &
Seagle)
Some of my favourite films are Brick, Casino Royale, Flight of
Dragons, 2001, Iron Man, the Prestige, Stranger Than Ficton, V for
Vendetta, the Dark Knight, Galaxy Quest, Hot Fuzz, the Princess
Bride, and Dark City. TV wise, I'm a Buffy and Angel fan, an avid
Doctor Who viewer, and an even bigger fan of House. House is
probably my favourite currently-running show.
I've recently been getting into TV detective shows / police
procedurals. There's something compelling there, in spite of the
repetetive formula! My favourites are Wallander, Wire in the Blood
and Waking the Dead. I wonder if I should start reading crime
novels too?
My music tastes are a little eclectic - mostly because I never seem
to find the time to explore a genre in full. I like Muse, Editors,
Manic Street Preachers, Bruce Springsteen, Rammstein, the James
Taylor Quartet, The Killers, the Kinks, Don McLean, the Temper
Trap, Pink Floyd, Rufus Wainwright, Coldplay, Damien Rice, Billy
Joel, Doves . . .
I love food and really enjoy eating out. If I had to play
favourites I'd say that you can't beat a good selection of
cheeses.
Drinks that involve chocolate and/or coffee number among humanity's
greatest achievements, as does the mighty tea leaf (a nice malty
Assam, if you don't mind. Herbal? No thanks.)
I think most people would be amazed what they could learn to do
without. I'm not an ascetic and I love to enjoy the luxuries I'm
lucky enough to have - but I don't like to think of any of them as
essential.
Life + the Universe + Everything. How things work and fit together,
fiction and storytelling, philosophy.
Eating out with friends, at the Pub, or at home with a cup of tea
and a decent book or film. That or on a train to visit someone for
the weekend.
I have a set of M&S socks with the days of the week on them.
You'd like to have a chat. Especially if you think that the British
Museum might be a nice place to go with a guy. Because that place
is awesome. Or an aquarium. I love aquariums! (Should the plural be
aquaria? Hmm.)
