My self-summary
Write a little about yourself. Just a paragraph will do.
Rather than list a bunch of adjectives to describe myself, I thought I would tell you a little of my story.

I was an electrician for ten years, but I hated it. So I taught myself how to write fiction-realism, naturalism. Then I went back to school and finished my degree (I dropped out the first time through: I was confused and young). But you know, it is tough to make a living at fiction and I needed money. So I started my own business.

For the past 17 years, I have been writing the guides you love to hate: software manuals. (I developed my own style of user guide, which clients hire me to implement in their companies.) It's been very good to me, tech writing. I get paid a great living for learning things and writing about them. And, believe it or not, it has provided a couple of adventures. For example, during the Dot Com bubble I worked in Brussels and Paris. That's right, I traveled to Europe to write user guides in English. Talk about a rare opportunity. Things are a lot different now, and I work freelance almost exclusively from home. That 8 foot commute is pretty good.

I am also involved in another business. It’s an online start up. Still, these days, I am creating the time to get back to my own writing and starting a blog. If you want to read something of mine (readily available on the Internet), let me know and I will send you the URL.

For the last 30+ years, I have had a group of about 15-20 friends. They have known me during the best parts of my life and the dumbest parts of my life. We’ve been there for each other through the serious, the silly and the mundane and we know each other pretty damned well. I hope it goes without saying that I value honesty, trust, loyalty and friendship above just about everything else.

Let's see. I am the go-to guy for my 91 year old mother and my 65 year old, mentally retarded sister. Which can be both a hoot and an aggravation at the same time.

Ah yes, I have a dog and a cat. I walk the dog regularly in the Oakland hills, which is a great way to stay in decent condition. She is a very energetic, happy gal who is about ready to go camping with me, so this will be our first year in the woods. You don't HAVE to love dogs, but it would go a long way. If you just liked them a lot, that would be fine.

I'd like to meet someone who, like me, subscribes to the Venn Diagram model of relationships. She, like me, is an independent individual who has her interests, her life, whether it is whole and intact, a work in progress, or somewhere in between. Likewise, I have my life and my interests. And we spend our time together exploring and enjoying those parts of our lives that overlap. I know this isn’t for everyone, but it suits some of us perfectly well. You know who you are.

Books: Les Miserables, War and Peace, Raintree County, Grapes of Wrath, Ulysses, Lolita, from Dawn to Decadence, Don Quixote

I probably have not read as much as many people on this site, but I have read widely: Jackie Collins and Stephen King to the dialogues of Plato, the Electric Kool-aid Acid Test to 120 Day of Sodom, the Baghavad Gita to the Poems of W.B. Yeats and John Donne. I often try to read things that are particularly difficult to read, even if they offend me. Sometimes especially if they offend me.

I have the same attitude about media and news. I listen to as many points of view as I can.

Favorite author: John Steinbeck. By all means.

“If the written word has contributed anything at all to our developing species and our half developed culture, it is this: Great writing has been a staff to lean on, a mother to consult, a wisdom to pick up stumbling folly, a strength in weakness and a courage to support sick cowardice.”

Movies: 2001, Once Upon a Time in the West/America, The Big Lebowski, Talledega Nights, Night of the Hunter, Tree of Life, Thin Red Line, Cinema Paradiso, Jean de Florette/Manon des Sources

I am falling in love with French (actually, foreign) comedies. They have a joy that American comedies have lost.

Music: I played drums/percussion for a while and have an automatic juke box in my head. I kind of obsessed over pop for well over 20-25 years, I have a lot of songs memorized. Because of this, I neglected other types of music and found classical relatively late in life. So, when I listen to music, it is usually classical. But, my favorite pop bands have been The Kinks (especially in the 70s), Graham Parker, Nick Lowe, Ian Hunter/Mot the Hoople, The Beatles, Savoy Brown, Leon Russell, The Sons of Champlain, Sly, Joe Cocker, Led Zepplin. That'll do. Generally speaking, I don't like hip hop/rap, CW or punk. although, there are a few exceptions.

You are the kind of woman who likes their life and wants to keep it, and not meld with your partner. You know the difference between sarcasm and irreverence and you like irreverence. You have been at least partly around the block and, ultimately, you want a partner for the rest of the trip.
